Taxis in St. Thomas
Taxis in St. Thomas
Since taxis are so expensive here are there any other means of getting around besides rental cars. We never get rental cars on our vacations and most likely won't for this on either. Also we want hotel accommodations that would put us within walking distance from a "happening" beach, so therefore we would only have to use taxis for getting out at night for nightlife. Any hotel suggestions would be great
First of all, welcome to the forum!
Since you are planning to stay on STT you may want to check with the hotel to determine if they have any options available to guests.
For ex. Marriott Frenchmans Reef offers a ferry to downtown Charlotte Amalie (from what i have heard).
But others may offer a similar service.
Driving on STT is not my idea of a good time. It's very busy esp during rush hours and unlike STJ it's easy to get lost if you don't know whwere you are going.
I definitely do not recommend renting a scooter (if offered). Due to terrain, narrow, curvy roads and erratic drivers it's just not safe. The same advice applies to STJ as well (although the erratic drivers are lss of an issue on STJ).
To be honest, unless you plan on picking a resort to stick to on STT then your best bet is to rent a car.
Perhaps you can just rent for a couple of days during your trip to explore instead of the whole time (if money is an issue).
And don't forget to keep left!
Hope this helps.

*Another fine scatterbrained production
I'm with you, I like to avoid car rentals when possible on vacation.
Not sure what you mean by "happening beach", but Secret Harbour resort is on a nice beach, has a restaurant bar and is a short taxi ride to Red Hook for additional nightly entertainment.
Some hotels not on the beach may offer daily shuttles to different beaches. I know the Holiday Inn in CA did that at one time.
Have a great trip
