In the old days you could invoke Rule 240 and the airline had to place you on the next available seat on any airline, not just your airline. This still holds true for the legacy airlines like Delta and American. Sprit is a discount carrier and does not adhere to Rule 240 and does not have interline agreements with other carriers so you will be completely on your own. Here is a link to an article on Rule 240:

While the discount carriers usually have lower fares they do come at a cost, this is one of those costs that the discount carriers cut to give those low fares.

Great to see someone else from BR on here!
You're right - MSY prices weren't too bad. But we're paying for 5 tickets and the price difference with Spirit added up fast. With hotel points, it is costing us only gas money and time to drive to ATL. Never again, though. I seems the big airlines take better care of you in these circumstances. We called Spirit to see what their plan was for stranded passengers. They said they should know something by Thursday. We plan to show up at the airport on Sunday and if they won't put us on another airline, we'll just pay what it takes to get new tickets. I don't want to sit in ATL 3 days waiting for them to figure it out! Plus we have trip insurance so hopefully that will cover some of the cost.
P.S. Geaux Tigers!

Sounds like you are handling it!

I just heard that Spirit is refunding the costs of the tickets plus a $100 voucher for future travel so you should be able to recover some of your out of pocket costs for your return ticket.
