Caneel

Post by mia »

This is the first time ever we have been able to use our FF miles to fly to STT 8) So....I have convinced DH to add 4 days to our trip and stay at Caneel. The way I look at it..."money saved on flights = extra days on St. John" He didn't quite see with my logic, but agreed just the same

I'm hoping that you can help with an ocean view room choice. I think with our particular package we can choose between Little Caneel and Turtle Bay. I would appreciate input from those of you have stayed there, because I am clueless :? We have had dinner there once and I've been studying the resort map...so I don't have much to go on. Please help!....mia

Too funny, Mia. I always try to convince my hubby that our trip is "practically free" since I use frequent flier miles :)

Truly it is just as cheap as going to Nags Head for us considering we pay nothing to get there! Other than the house rental and the car rental, oh and getting from STT to STJ, and the mandatory shopping .. practically FREE.

But still there are 5 of us going so at an average of $400 per ticket we are saving $2000. That should just about cover a nice piece of jewelry!!! Don't you like the inner workings of the feminine mind.

Hi Mia, if you booked an ocean view package you also have the option of staying on Hawksnest Beach or the non-beachfront rooms off main Caneel Beach, along with the rooms on Turtle Bay and the non-beachfront rooms on Little Caneel. It just depends how close to the main hub that you want to be.

My personal preference from the rooms listed would be a second floor room on either Hawksnest Beach or Turtle Bay Beach. I'd rather be further from the main area, so it is quieter and less populated.

liamsaunt,
Thank for your input. The package we are looking at is called Rosewood Escapes: Summer Special...it is a B&B package which ends up being less expensive than their regular summer room rates. It lists just two options for ocean view:
Ocean View (OL)
Ocean View (OT)
USD 425.00

When I called reservations, I was told that OL is
"on Little Caneel" and OT is on "Turtle Bay Beach"

If they do offer Hawksnest also, would that be your first choice or do you consider Turtle Bay and Hawksnest to be equal? (views, snorkeling, privacy, etc.)
I think I would prefer Hawksnest because in looking at the map, it seems to be the only option with a sunrise view. However, I'm afraid that it isn't offered as one of our choices. Do you think they might be more flexible during our time frame...8/29 thru 9/02?

Thanks for allowing me to pick your brain....mia

oops....almost forgot....I did a search and 7A on Paradise came up quite frequently, what do you think about that, if it is a choice?

Well, that is the off season, so maybe they would accommodate you if there were available rooms. I really liked staying on Hawksnest. I would get up super early and go down to the beach while DH (and everybody else at the resort, it seemed!) was still alseep, hang out in a hammock with a book and watch the sunrise. We saw two spotted eagle rays swimming together off Hawksnest too.

Turtle Beach would probably be even less "busy" than Hawksnest--there are 24 rooms on Hawksnest and 12 on Turtle.

I would defintely choose Turtle over Little Caneel. There are only four rooms on Little Caneel that qualify as "ocean view," and I am sure they are very nice. The main problem I would have with those rooms is that they are close to the dive shop and beach terrace, so it's busier, and the trail to Honeymoon goes right by these rooms.

OK, enough beach talk for now. I am off to the Red Sox game! :D

Definitely the best room for the price, in my opinion. We stayed there last year. I have some pictures of the view and the interior I can put up when I get home from the game.

My husband and I LOVE Caneel. We are actually headed back in the fall for our fourth visit! With that being said, anywhere there is an oceanview room I'm sure you can't go wrong.

For a better idea of how the resort is laid out, go to www.caneelbay.com/travel.cfm or click on "travel details" on the website. Once on the page, you can click on "resort map". Here you will be able to view the map of Caneel Bay.

Any additional questions, I'd be happy to answer!

Mia,
My mom and I were there in October. Not sure what is important to you...but here is what I can tell you. Little Caneel is a small beach, but pretty. It's very close to the lobby, restaurants, etc. If that is important to you, that would be your choice. If you must see the sunrise, go for Hawksnest. My vote would be for Turtle..private and just beautiful. Hawksnest is great for seeing turtles while you are snorkeling. Also, my mom and I saw two spotted eagle rays quite a way out and around the corner. However, Turtle has some beautiful reef and lots of fish out and to the left. The two are close together..a short walk or a quick shuttle ride. You really can't go wrong either way...and I would definitely recommend snorkeling both. Enjoy yourself! ~Tiffany
Thanks, Tiffany

Photos as promised.

Room 7A interior:

View from room 7A. See how close you are to Scott Beach? That's why I like this location so much:

I have photos of the Cottage Point views too, but my Hawksnest room views photos were taken with a film camera so I can't post them.
