OK. So here's what I do when I sit in my cube and think about how crappy this is compared to STJ...
1. Gas Station
2. "Louisiana" themed restaurant
...All I got so far.
I'm sure all of us have thought of this at sometime...

I've always thought someone should start a storage business in STJ where you could leave/store your snorkel gear, beach chairs, beach shoes, and whatever you'd like to have while you're there but don't want to cart back and forth. It would need to be a climate controlled environment.
A gas station is a great idea as that is very much needed.

I was thinking about the same thing. Then I thought about how many people utilizing it would be needed to make it worthwhile, and the fact that, as you noted, a lot of the things you'd want to leave you'd want in a climate controlled (AC) environment. Not to mention somewhere with good security and/or loss insurance.Diana2 wrote:I've always thought someone should start a storage business in STJ where you could leave/store your snorkel gear, beach chairs, beach shoes, and whatever you'd like to have while you're there but don't want to cart back and forth. I don't see how you could make it cost effective, so I'm looking for the next hare-brained scheme that I can try!
Come see us!

DH and I usually have these kinds of conversations on island after some adult beverages...
2 years ago he was sure we should buy the Sadie Sea (which was for sale at the time.) Then he wanted to buy Crabby's because "all it needs is alittle marketing." (Sure, honey.)
With the new light of a sober day these ideas fall by the wayside. Although I've always thought it would be nice to open a recycling center on STJ, and fabricate fancy counters out of recycled rum bottles. (Go ahead and say it: sure, honey.)
Like you, I'm still at my desk.

Oh, we've tossed around some ideas in the back yard with some cocktails:
Own an electric car rental company! And have a self serve car wash and vacuum area.
Invent an organic, waterproof, tanning lotion that will kill all mosquitos and no-see-ums that come within a 10 foot radius. Cha-ching!
Offer Zipline Adventure trips from the top of Caneel Hill trail down to Solomon beach! (hey, Sir Richard Branson did it on his island!)
Have an automatic ice machine dispenser built near the dock that you or charter boats can fill up bags or their coolers with.
This one we have actually thought about sober:

Laurie, I'm all in for the VIOL Wind Turbine Power Plant!! Good one~

1. Underwater camera rental. Maybe it exists already. Likely would have to be a side business - don't think it would bring in enuff $$ on its own - you probably couldnt charge much more than $10/day (?)
2. sell, install, and maintain solar swimming pool heater systems.
Again, maybe this exists already (I don’t pretend to know much about villas or many of the businesses in STJ, so locals, help me out).
Seems to me with the proper marketing, this could do well, because you know those villas with those cool, shady pools? They must have a roof surface with a southern exposure. Pool water is pumped through the roof mounted solar collector(s), where it is heated before it is returned to the pool, like a garden hose lying in the sun.
These can also be installed at those villas that have pools that get sun all day long that and get TOO warm in the summer, because in hot climates, the collectors can also be used to COOL the pool during peak summer months by circulating the water through the collectors at night.
The internets indicate that a solar pool heating system usually costs between $3,000 and $4,000 to buy and install. This provides a payback of between 1.5 and 7 years, depending on your local fuel costs. I imagine the ROI would be pretty quick on STJ. They also typically last longer than gas and heat pump pool heaters.

I think we need a shirt for Ruth that says "get the pluck outta here" from Boston Mike's Chicken Removal Service which is located behind Boston Mike's Jerk Chicken Sandwich Shop in Cruz Bay.StJohnRuth wrote:Chicken Removal Service.
