Take your markers with you!

Post by nascarfan59 »

We found these images later after a trip to Little Lameshur last week. I have notified the government.

We have assembled a few already. We will be bringing the supplies to make a total of 25 markers. We will be arriving Friday 5/21 late in the afternoon. If you would like to have one, let me know.

Nascarfan,

I don't see the Lionfish in your photos. I must be missing something...can you point it out?

I do see what appears to be a Magnificent Feather Duster (to my eyes anyway). Your post is a good reminder that I need to teach my kids what to look for before we head down in 5 weeks.

photo #1 is a squirrelfish, with a feather duster. Photo #2 is a feather duster.

It is still a good idea to bring the markers. A larger lionfish was found at Francis Bay while we were there.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Not being able to see all angles I now see what you are talking about. At a glance it can be deceptive.
Good thing it was a false alarm!

Quote from USVI Lionfish FB page today:

"Usvi Lionfish: So far, every marked fish has been removed. We can not say the same for every sighted fish. Everyone must be carrying a lionfish marker and know how to use it, for us to succeed."

I will be in the water in a couple days. What number would you call if you found a lionfish?

What to do if you see a lionfish:

1) Mark the location with a cork streamer (available from DPNR), take a GPS reading, and
report the sighting IMMEDIATELY to DPNR.

340-643-0800
I have also seen this as a daytime DPNR # 340-773-1082.

Another # I have seen to report to is Rafe Boulon with the National Park Service, St John at 340-693-8950.

If people want to drop off unused markers when they are leaving, I can set up a basket to toss them in at St. John Spice. Then, when people arrive they can pick them up.
I can print out the phone numbers also and put copies in the same spot.
Would that work?

Awesome idea Ruth. Unfortunately, I haven't had a minute to make one but I would surely love to use one if available. (hopefully I won't need it though) Looking forward to seeing you!

I told my daughter that it would be a great Girl Scout project to make a ton of markers and give to villa agents or the park service or somewhere like that (or St. John Spice!)

But she doesn't want to because the Lionfish, you see, is her "favorite fish".
"Sponges grow in the ocean...I wonder how much deeper it would be if that didn't happen."
