Don't forget to go to the Beach Bar on Sunday afternoon about 4-7pm. You will meet all sorts of new friends.

So sorry about your mom. You will love STJ and there is great snorkeling right off shore.

So sorry for your loss! I do know how devastating it is, to lose your mom. We are never so old we don't need a mom! You are going to a place where many of us have found the tremendous peace it takes, to move on to another day. I hope you find this peace, and can't think of better place to seek it.

Sorry to hear about your mom - my sister and I did the same when our mom was dying and it was so gratifying to be able to care for her - time will heal the sorrow - if you really want to get out on the water check out renting a dinghy - it is under $300 for the day with gas and insurance and a lot of fun - like everyone else said the snorkeling from shore is awsome but if you are hell bent on getting out on the water a dinghy is an affordable option. Good luck and have a blast.

My sympathies also, but have you ever picked a fabulous place to heal!! If you've never snorkeled much before I would skip the boat thing. You're going to feel much more comfortable being able to gradually walk into the water and and snorkeling close to shore and you'll be able to see just as much as on an expensive excursion. As you become more proficient you can go farther and deeper as you wish. Take the money you save and rent a jeep for the entire week - you'll be much happier because you'll be able to see the whole island. There are so many beaches that I've only seen a fraction of them after 3 trips. Be aware that the driving is a little scary for the first few days, but you'll get used to it and the scenery you see will literally take your breath away. You'll make memories that you and your sister can share for the rest of your lives.

Thanks everyone! I'm going to call around and see if I can still find a Jeep! Yesterday was rough, I forgot Mom was gone for a second and picked up the phone to call her while I was at work. It broke my heart to hear nothing but 'the number you have dialed is no longer in service.' Planning this vacation 6 months ago was fate's way of taking care of me!
Sadly, I am tickerless :(
