Charlottesville, VA ??

Post by Maryanne »

Does anyone live there or know it well? We are going to a wedding over Memorial Day weekend. I booked the Omni Hotel months ago when I knew we were going, but now I'm not so sure about it. Is there a better choice?

Also, not sure about whether to fly directly to Richmond and drive an hour, or change planes somewhere and fly into Charlottesville itself. Is it a nice drive to Charlottesville?

Any insight information would be greatly appreciated!

I've been to C'ville several times. I catch a connection in Atlanta. It's a small, but good airport. I don't have much to offer on the hotel selection.

It is a fairly easy town to get around. You might want to take the time to visit Thomas Jefferson's home Montecello while you are there. You can reserve a tour time and pay for it on line. Plan on a half day there. You'll want to spend some time walking the grounds before and/or after the tour. Another activity I suggest is a walk on the University of VA campus. The original quad, designed by Thomas Jefferson, is the place to start.

I've been to Charlottesville a half-dozen times or so. The Omni is a modern hotel downtown on the mall with a number of cafes, restaurants and shops within walking distance. I might prefer the Boars Head Inn which is west of town in a pretty residential area---on the edge of Virginia horse country, although I noticed some Tripadvisor reviews suggesting its gotten a little tired. Might depend on what setting you prefer.

Can't tell you anything about the OMNI there
but, we have stayed at one in New Orleans and
it was really Fantastic! Very plush and romantic...
and it was very affordable. Room service delivered
fresh coffee and morning news at pre-selected time.
We also received vouchers at checkin for free
breakfast made to order each morning in their
cafe. Hope the one you have is that good too!

The drive from Richmond to Charlottesville is easy and very nice scenery through the Virginia countryside. If the flight schedule/price is better to Richmond, than flying directly to Charlottesville, (and you are going to rent a car anyway), you should be fine.

Charlottesville is in such a pretty part of Virginia (I am a native Virginian, so I admit to being biased). As the OP said, a visit to Monticello is well worth it, for the history and the beautiful scenery. We also enjoyed walking around Univ of Va.

We visit family there, so not sure about hotels. Being in the downtown area might be nice since you can walk to shops and restaurants.

Have a great trip!

Hi Maryanne!
The drive from Richmond to Charlottesville is toooo easy! You'll pick up I-64 West less than a mile from the airport and in less than an hour you're there!
If you have any spare time while in Charlottesville get back on the Interstate and head West up to Afton Mountain (about 30 minutes). The views up there are amazing! What a great time of year to be there!
Enjoy :)

I like the B&B route. C'ville has a ton of very nice ones in town.

We stayed at the Inn at Court Square while in town for an Amos Lee concert in the fall. Very convenient to everything and VERY nice.

Thanks so much for these tips!

I will check out that inn, looks gorgeous, though I'm finding that people are booked for the Saturday night of the three nights we will be there.

inn booked.
:(

it's Memorial Day weekend, lots of weddings.

looks like we're staying at the Omni.. I booked it so long ago I wish I had done a little research! I just booked where the 'save the date' card suggested.

I look forward to the drives and day trips, though.

thx

I did a fellowship at UVA and I would second Keswick. We've stayed there a few times. Top notch and you can score some great deals occasionally so don't freak out when you see the rack rate.

Another must visit is Barboursville Winery nearby. Excellent VA wines.

The drive to C'ville from just about any direction is lovely: History, horse country and old money-- what's not to love??
*Another fine scatterbrained production
