Things to do in the USVI
I did have my eye on the Best Western and now I have some comfirmation that it is a good place for me and my dtr to spend our vacation. It's convenient and fits my budget. I just have to figure out the least expensive way to feed both of us while we're there. I've read and seen sample menus of some of the eating establishments there on St. Thomas-expensive is all I can say!:>) Oh, well I'm sure I'll work that out. Now all Ihave to do is figure out some local tours or attractions to visit. I'm getting excited. I've been curious and wanting to visit the USVI for awhile now. Wanna get to the BVI also one day.

One of the places that your daughter will love is Coral World. It is really amazing and fun for all ages!

One of the ways that you can budget for food better is to make sandwiches for lunch. The BWEB has a mini fridge in all their rooms. We always take p-butter, jelly, snacks, ect down with us. We always just pop into the room, make a quick lunch, and head on back out to the beach. I also always stock our room/fridge with beer and pop. That alone saves a ton over money over going up to the beach bar all day to get drinks.
How long are you staying? You might want to think of renting a car as taxi's add up. They charge per person and per bag. Driving on the left is fairly easy to get used to, and the maximum speed limit on STT is 35MPH.
Some other things that you might want to do:
1. Paradise point. You can either drive yourself to the top or take the tram. GREAT views!
2. Drive around the island and stop at the little beaches you find along the way. The island isn't very big, so it is very do-able in 1 day.
3. Take the ferry over to St. John and check that out.
Have a wonderful vacation....and enjoy this great time with your daughter!

I would check into the price of a condo/villa in comparison with the hotel too. You might be surprised that cost really isn't that different and you can make allot of your meals at "home". I am a very frugal person and have rented a villa for 10 days for $1500! It was a 2 bedroom 2 bath cottage 30 feet above the ocean with a full kitchen! You would have to rent a 4wd vehicle though to get to it.
Caribbean Saloon has a huge lunch menu and they don't change to their dinner menu until 6pm so you could have a nice dinner at 5pm for a decent price! There is also Pizza Hut and McDonald's if necessary! The pizza a Magens Bay is huge and a must eat! You should be fine if you do a little research before you go. to me the best "things to do" are free...snorkel and chill at the beach. Pack a cooler and you are good to go!

One of the things we are warned about it that we should not feed the wildlife such as the fish. Having said that, the fish at Coki Point were all but in a petting zoo when we were there some years ago. People feed them bread and cat food all the time. It is, in fact, one of the attractions at that place for the people and the fish. Your daughter might enjoy that. It is close to Coral World. I would want her to know that this is not something we would ordinarily do.
Magens Bay is a great place to swim. There wasn't much to see in terms of snorkling. It has a nice sandy bottom. There weren't many fish or coral there.
The other thing we enjoyed is the kayak eco tour. It is in a bay on the east end of the south shore. It's not cheap but it is an entire half day tour. It is entertaining, educational and memorable. It is not too challenging even for a 9-year-old.
The Greenhouse is a good place to get a meal. Supper there would not be too expensive. It's about the same as a Chili's in the US. If you get a seat by the windows, you can look out on the harbor. We enjoyed watching the large cruise ships leave the harbor at the end of the day. Directly in front of the Greenhouse you will find a major taxi stand. It will take you no time to get a taxi and go on to your next stop.
Since you will be downtown to go to the Greenhouse, take a walk through the shops on and around Main Street. You'll find everything from $10 tee shirts to $5,000 watches.
You can take $2,600 worth of merchandise tax and duty free home with you. They don't require that you spend the whole $2,600.
But it is nice to know that there will not be any taxes when you leave.
Have a great trip.
