Things you have to bring with you to the Island

Starting to get things together and I thought it may be fun or interesting to see what people have to bring with them when they go to the Islands.

Things beside the usual clothes, or footwear, or fins.

Maybe I'll also get some ideas for myself.

Large zip lock bags - they come in very handy
Porkroll - it's a philly thing
Cd's with favorite island music
Huggies for the beers

Anybody?

Here's a few we didn't know about before our last trip, but will bring next time:

Plastic Grocery Bags (we like the ones from Target) - for your dirty clothes that smell "interesting" after a day running around in the 110% humidity...helps when you're tossing everything in one duffle for the trip back home.

Baby Powder - Never tried it, but it's supposed to help remove sand from your skin easily...like when you get back to your car from the beach. Apparently, it absorbs the moisture in your skin that was causing the sand to stick to you. Worth a try.

Koozies - Beer gets warmer faster in STJ, who knew.

waterproof bags for daysails, to keep stuff dry
small binoculars to see details of all those cays
fold up hat to keep the face and neck from getting too fried
tea tree oil to discourage ants

I am packing this weekend too (well, after I quit stalling and get off the computer.) I have come to accept that I will never be a carry on only person. It's not the clothes, it's all the other stuff. These are the things I need to have a good vacation. If it means an hour at the baggage claim, that is OK.

Sunscreen (I use a particular kind that they don't sell on the island)
Corkscrew (the ones at the house always stink)
Chef's knife (see above)
Cameras, underwater housings, tripod, extra batteries, extra memory cards, and various camera accessories (this is practically a carry on bag by itself!)
Spice kit
Ziploc bags
Plastic gloves for meat/fish prep (yeah I am weird)
Fish ID guides
Otter box for cash/card storage while snorkeling
Neat sheet
copied cds for the car (so it doesn't matter if they get lost or stolen)
Ipod dock (if the house doesn't have one)
snorkel gear (of course!)
rashguards, board shorts and head buff for snorkeling
various books and journal
laptop

I am also bringing lionfish markers this time.

Baby powder is great, not only for getting the sand off, but if you get any rashes from being so wet, it really dries up the area.

Beach chairs? We use to. Last time we left them down there with friends that live there. This time we have beach chairs in the condo. We use to bring them to the Keys all the time. It was kind of a road trip, so we needed them. Not wierd at all.

Spices? Great idea. Last time I got the small zip lock bags in AC Moore in the jewelry department. I put my spices in there and labeled them all. Worked out great.

Binoculars are a great idea. I'm going to bring them this time.

Good call, Mike...consider the koozies scratched off the list, adding industrial sized McDonald's soda straws for maximum beer flowage.

It sounds goofy, but I always pack an extension cord. It comes in handy when an outlet is too far from where I want the iPod speaker system to be...and for various, other stuff.

CDs? People still use those? I have about 5,000 songs on my iPod and it is the size of a deck of cards. It's 2010 people.

Did you find a rental vehicle that plays your IPod on STJ? I think that is where the CDs come in handy.

Don't forget photocopies of ids, and perscriptions meds. Photocopies of credit cards with a phone number just in case.

...and for some, maybe an extra pair of contacts or glasses. LOL!

This is in reference to the person that unfortunately lost their glasses and wore perscription snorkling mask for a few days.

We listen to the radio in the Jeep. But, we do have one of those thingies that connects to the iPod and transmits over the radio.
