Day 9: Mahhhhhhho, LMG tries to kill me & Blue's Fest!

Post by flip-flop »

Day 9: LAST full beach day :-( Mahhhhhhho, LMG tries to kill me & Blue's Fest!

As it was my last full beach day (LMG had two more days to go! I tried to not hate on her too much), we decided after a bit of waffling, to head to Maho. Easy was the order of the day.

I really don't remember if we hiked today. I am sure we were up with the sun, took care of the pups and had coffee and a bagel on the deck. Mid-trip I ran out of bagels and made another run to Lilly's to pick up some more. This time I chose something called multigrain energy or something like that. They sounded pretty healthy...for a bagel. Anyway, they were delicious!

Post-breakfast we packed up the car and headed out. Oh, how quickly the time flies by!

Beautiful Maho

Image

It could have been that we had a fairly early start today, not sure, but Maho was pretty empty. Note to those iphoneaholics out there (You know who you are): ATT reception is better at the right end of the beach, facing the water, than the left. BUT there were fewer people at the left end, so that's where we were. Sorry, Deb! This would explain the terrible time we had coordinating a meet-up time/place with you. Though we eventually figured it out! Deb, of Jay & Deb fame (another buddy of LMG's - I am starting to realize I am either an anomoly or in good company!), had the day off and wanted to meet up so she came over on the ferry.

Eventually, one long, convoluted cab ride later she made it to Maho to join us. Deb is a cool chick!

We also had a very helpful person explain to us that we should NOT use our phones AT ALL unless you want to get charged a "ton of money" - of course we ignored her. Another FYI - if you are an iphoneaholic - you can call ATT and just explain to them that you never left the USVI and even if your phone picks up lime or boat phone or whatever else is out there (there is one that is just a series of numbers) they will waive the fees.

All you have to do is ask. Not that I, myself, have an iphone problem or anything, or that I have needed this information. Ever. Nope, not me.

So another day, another beach. We floated, read, snacked, drank. We'd run out of Skeeters by now (or just got lazy, one of the two) and moved on to a simpler drink. 2 ingredients. Malibu & sprite zero. I am usually a dark cola girl - rum and coke kind of girl - but this was refreshing and awesomeness in a cup. We brought enough to share and had a great time just relaxing and hanging out with Deb!

There is just nothing not to love about Maho!

Many, many, many trips later...I am still not jaded. The colors never cease to amaze me.

Image

Before we knew it, we had wasted an entire day doing a whole lot of nothing. Maho never got too terribly busy today. We chalked it up to it being a Saturday and maybe all of the turnover for the next week. Who knows. We were not complaining.

We packed it in and after unsuccessfully trying to talk Deb into staying with us and going to the blues fest, we headed to town to put her back on the ferry. Then it was off to Skinny's for a last blue burger of the week!

Image

Fastest Service EVER today at Skinny's. Maybe someone had ordered and cancelled their order, not sure, but I didn't even have time to shop or pee before this was on the table in front of me.

Image

Something about a long, lazy day of lounging in the sun makes this burger + a coconut swizzle = heaven.

We were even in time to catch a little live music.

Image

Post-Burger. Mmmmmmm goood. We headed back to the house to take care of and hang out with the pups and to relax a little before heading down to the blues fest. Oh, and to clean up a little bit. You would never want to be all sweaty for the blues fest, now would you LMG? Nooooooo, you wouldn't ;-)

Showered, rested, cleaned up. We decided to take our chairs and walk down to the ballfield in Coral Bay. Mostly downhill and only about a 10 minute walk tops.

Image

Traded our tickets for wrist bands and headed in to drop our chairs off in a good spot. It was entirely good luck that we ended up here this week. Thanks Pia for planning your trip during blues fest! It was AWESOME!

Image

Randy and Marcia had graciously invited us up to Reef Madness earlier in the week/day(?), but we had trouble pulling ourselves together enough to make it up there. Having a little time to kill we just wandered around Coral Bay. The hood was definitely picking up and we saw one group of tailgaters tailgating with a FULL ON GRILL in their truck. No little portable grill for them. HUGE grill. We gave them props for being the most "all in" tailgaters we'd ever seen. LMG got a photo I think!

And here is the part when I almost died.

If you see this sign, and some nice girl who seems entirely reasonable starts up the hill, Do NOT Follow HER. I REPEAT, I strongly suggest that you DO NOT FOLLOW HER. She's crazy.

Image

Did I mention...JUST SAY NO!

First of all, Seagrape Hill. HA! Do not be fooled people. It is no hill. It is a mountain. And their house is allllllll the way at the top. I wish I had a picture from the bottom up because you would really not believe it. I don't think RANDY believed it. He's like "You've done something I haven't even done!" And I was thinking, "What completely lost my freaking mind!" We made it. I didn't die.

At least there was help down below if I needed it.

Image

We were sopppppping wet by the time we made it to the house. Graciously, again, I use that word because Randy and Marcia are so far beyond it, they offered a drink, towels, a shower, or a dip in the pool! We took them up on the paper towels to wipe ourselves down and the drinks! I also partially took 'em up on the pool thing, sitting on the side and dipping my toes.

Wow - Reef Madness - just wow. I had followed the blog a little and seen pictures but wow. JUST WOW! They don't do it justice. It is beautiful inside and out. The views are to die for and the decor is top notch. Very warm and classic. Almost worth the WALK up the hill. I recommend driving up. Or calling Randy to run down and pick you up! Once my breathing returned to normal and post-frozen concoction provided by Randy, I could really take it all in. What a burden for them to have to take in that view every day!

Soon enough, it was time to head down to the festivities. This time we hitched a ride! The Blues Festival seems to be one of, if not THE, event of the year for Coral Bay at least. You could feel the excitement. It was far less crowded that I had anticipated but there was a very good, relaxed crowd. Amazing music. The Norweigan Blues guy (aka JAN TORE LAURITSEN) was my favorite. He gave that squeezebox a workout! The music was great. The drinks were INCREDIBLY strong (ice, 4 oz. or so of alcohol, splash of mixer/soda) and the food was pretty awesome too. LMG and I split a bbq chicken and sides from Sheila's Pot. They had a little booth set-up on the field. Great choice.

When picking the sides I could choose regular potato salad or a sweet potato casserole kind of thing. When I chose the later, the lady smiled and said "oooooohhhhh you are gonna be really happy with that!" She was SO right. It was really good. The chicken just fell off the bone, very moist. I will not hesitate to grab something from Sheila's in the future (she sets up in the park right there as you get off the ferry). Not sure if there is a more "permanent" location!

Enjoying the blues

Image

Before we knew it the night had flown by. I was to be up and at 'em early in the morning to make my ferry, so we decided to call it a night. Randy (may the lord bless his soul) offered to drive us back up the the house! THANK YOU RANDY!!! I don't know if I could have done it. Well, with Drill Sargeant LMG, I am sure I would have made it, but it was SO nice to not have to make the trek! The thing is LMG is actually so nice and mellow about it, you kind of will follow her anywhere. She's not a drill sargeant type at all. But I am sticking by the "she's crazy" statement. Just now, I have learned that when she and I kept saying all week, "People are crazy!" we definitely should have been including ourselves in there!

Hey, at least we have a story!

Your daily report brought back wonderful memories for me. My girlfriend and I were at Skinnies the same time as you - watching the band.

We also attended the Blues Fest (and saw the tail gaiters). Apparently for the islanders who didn't want to fork out $30 - the hill behind the baseball field is the way to go. We even had a chance to dance with the senator as the hula hoop was being passed around.

Good times, and good report.

We must have just missed you at Reef Madness. We had reservations at Sweet Plantains. Randy & Marcia are awesome! Love the picture of Seagrape Hill - our neighborhood! Luckily, we usually only see it while we're DRIVING up the hill. We enjoyed the festival from our porch and pool. The music was incredible and floated up the hill wonderfully. It was incredible that they had the whole thing taken down and cleaned up by the next morning. Looking forward to the 2011 Blues Festival. Glad you had such a great trip!

I totally forgot about the hippy dippy (BUT VERY TALENTED) hula hoop girls. Like I said at the time, there hadn't been that many hippies east of the Haight Ashbury since the 60s!

I love the Maho photo with the sand and the tree roots, really beautiful.

I am sad your reports are ending.

Love it. Wonderful TR.
The only thing that makes me weepier than that first view of Maho, as you roll in from North Shore Road from Cruz,(I'm in love with that hollow...) is that last view as I leave at the end of each trip.
The colors, scents on the breeze, lazying/ limin' through plans, because, like you said, "There's nothing to complain about at Maho."
I can't wait for a burger at Skinny's. Fast service that day? Groovy. I somehow enjoy waiting for it. I'm sure you know what I mean...
Also looking forward to the burger at the G- Spot in a few short weeks.
Wonderful photos, and congrats on another delicious trip! You just made my day. Thanks again, and always
Smiles-
MJ

Love, love, loved the reports flip-flop.

Please remember, that LMG lives a mile up or more, less air. She can probably drink and hike at the same time! No shame, she has an advantage.

It's a best kept secret when drinking or hiking at sea level. The only thing I'm not used to is humidity while hiking. Water pours off me.

So glad you two had such a great vaca, fun to hear about.
