Why is Delta doing this to me???

Post by KTinTX »

Let me preface this by saying I really didn't want to fly on Delta this June with our kids, but their pricing was much more conducive to a family trip than American. Additionally, I can leave from Hobby airport in Houston which is much closer to my home than "Houston Intergalactic".

Now..over the past month or so, Delta has changed our flight times at least four times...sometimes one segment, sometimes all. One of the changes did eliminate about 1.5 hours of a 4 hour layover, so that was a plus, but NEVER...NEVER have we been contacted about the changes. My email and phone are both on the contact info. Unacceptable.

Our seats for the flight to STT (the first for our kids) have all been reassigned so that we have 3 on one side and the opposite aisle. In fact, they assigned the opposite aisle seat to a passenger that is only 11 and put the 3 older passengers together on the other side of the aisle. I don't know about your kids, but mine definitely want a window.

I've sent them an email asking why these changes have not been communicated, and that we've never had these problems with any other airline. I apologize for venting, but this was getting really old. We will make it to STJ...a hour or so and one ferry later than originally planned, but the one thing I value in customer service over any other is honest communication. I'd rather have the truth than not be told what I don't want to hear.

Thanks for the ears.

In the past we have had similiar changes on Delta - without any notice. When the final change was in place we were emailed and called... until then we watched and wondered. No kids were involved, and that makes matters more difficult for you, for sure. Hope it all works out.

I'd take just a few minutes and call them to rectify any seating questions you have. I fly Delta fairly regularly and yes they do change flights pretty regularly - especially if you booked more than a few months in advance.

But - I've always found them to be as accomodating as possible when I've called them for help.

Airlines today are under amazing pressure to fly only full planes. They change the schedules regularly based upon historical occupancy rates. It's really a condition of business that won't change. Hopefully - their customer service reps will also stay accomodating and help families like yours with seating arrangements.

Good Luck! Have Fun!

Ditto about Delta.... I check our flight every week or so and make sure there are no changes...otherwise it seems that they let you know about a month out! The good news has been that when I call they are
pretty accommodating!

We tend to put up with any inconveniences because it makes Peoria,IL to STT a one-stop trip not a two-stop trip!
We often pay more for that convenience! :-)

Delta UGH. Keep checking into the changes and call and demand what you want/need. They make promises on the phone and then you get the airport and suddenly, no one knows what you are talking about. I've had 2 horrid experiences with them and do all I can to avoid flying with them.

Had the same thing happen twice in regard to seats. The first time, my then 6 year olds were placed in other parts of the plane from my husband and I- next to strangers. I got alot of attitude from the gentleman at the gate but worked it out. A simple "So you are telling me, you and your airline are willing to take responsibility for my 6 year olds that you have seated next to strangers?"

This trip, we had the same thing happen. I called the airline, said I had paid for assigned seats- even booked early and they had been changed. I was told "no worries, we have 20 open seats you can get together at the gate and we will note on your tickets that you NEED to be together". I kept calling to be sure my tickets were noted as such. It just happened I was checking in my other flights and I found I could grab 4 seats together and I did. Not the best seats but I figured, book them and then I could see about switching at the airport. Went to the desk, told them about the conversation and promise and was laughed at. No biggy, we had seats together. A gentleman (close to 7 feet tall) went up to the desk and somehow managed to get people moved around to accomodate his need to be with his family. Problem is, the people who were moved were moved to already occupied seats- OURS BEING ONE OF THEM! Again, we worked it out on the plane but tempers were high with other passengers who had a similar situation and the flight crew was grumbling. Why can't they get it right?

Add insult to injury, fly into JFK (didn't want to- that was another change). Had to race to the other side of the airport to get on our flight. Our itinerary said it was a 3 hour flight to Boston. Weird? Misprint? We were hurried to a bus and then onto the tarmac to get on the plane. Everyone was on- my son needed the restroom but was told "not during taxiing". Thirty minutes and we are told OOPS- problem with runway construction- we're leaving late sorry for the inconvenience folks. Ninety minutes later we are in the air..all the while my son "holding it". Guess what, we landed in Boston ON TIME. The morons knew about the delay beforehand but chose to act like it was "news to them".

So yes, Delta UGH, stay on them. Once they have your money, they do not care how or when you get to your destination.

I've come to the conclusion that the times posted when I book a STT flight have absolutely no relevance as to when we'll actually fly, be in on Delta, American, United,or US Air. 3 1/2 years ago our AA flights coming, and going, were changed daily. I stopped getting my bowels in an uproar about it, as I can't make them honor what they sold me. We always get there.

agreed with JT, I fly like every week of the year on US Air and it seems that vacation flghts to Caribbean get changed more than most other domestic flights.

My feeling is that this is real common, and flying these days requires more customer interaction than in years past. My company never uses travel agents anymore, I book all my own flights directly on the US Air web site, and I can check up on my flghts and seats on that site at any time. I'm a chairman level and they rarely email me about changes....go figure...

By all means also, when you're flying with family, its a good idea to check the web site weekly in the months leading up to your vacation to make sure things keep from getting too screwed up.

best of luck, don't get flustered, you'll live through this and die of something else. :)

Just call Delta direct and speak w/ a rep. make sure you ask for that persons name and get a confirmation # from them. They have changed our flt also and not told us, I check every week and is how I found out. But they are heck of alot better than Continental !! They have to be the worst and their customer service people the rudest/snippiest ones I have ever dealt with. Beside being that the airlines were the one who cancelled the flt 2 hrs before take off !! For no apparent reason and rebooked for next day. This was for our 3 GK's flying up here alone and were in pkg lot of airport. Only way found out was a last minute check on-line..... Had to put them up for a night, son-in-law had to take more time off from work etc etc. And Continental didn't even blink.

have found Delta to be the most accomodating cust service so far.

It's annoying by far but keep your eye on the final destination.

All flying into JFK can expect probs,it wasn't the best time of year for them to close the main runway.
No ticker anymore. Next vac will prob. be the Fl Keys.

Last August,Friday night at 10:00 pm we recieve a recorded call from Delta that our 6:00am flight, the next morning has been rescheduled for Sunday.Talk about panic. You know how excited you are the night before. This is getting more common in smaller markets.
At least they notified us.

Thanks guys. I'm a very flexible and calm traveller...drives my wife nuts because stuff that happens DURING the travel and trip you just have to roll with....

BUT...the planning part gets me going LOL. I guess because I've never had to deal with this many and type of changes. I fly exclusively on either Southwest or Continental and have had nothing but good experiences with both. The seats probably won't be a huge deal because I'm sure the kids will be more into their iPods or something than looking out the window. I'M the one that's gonna miss the window!

Oh, and I did get a reply from Delta saying that changes occur and that to reconfirm seats you have to call an agent and rebook your ticket??? What??? I show as confirmed and with seats online now, so I'm going to ignore their poor attempt at service and think about fixing myself a painkiller!

When US Air changes our flights, and I see this by looking up the reservation on-line, then I first get a request to approve the change on-line when I open up that reservation. I have to click on approved, then it takes me into the reservation.

So, by all means, either confirm your changes on line or call them up. They already assign you seats when you make the change, but you can't be too careful.....also, you should be able to change your seats yourself on-line, right? Move around to better seats on the seat chart.

Also, if you want to find where the good and bad seats are, check out this web site, it rates every seat on every plane on every airline....

best of luck!

Surfnh,

I could definitely change the seats online if there were any empty seats on the plane. By the time I found out about the change and looked at the seating there are only a few singles open and of course the exit row which my kids cannot sit in.

I'm adopting the "it's all good" attitude, as we do have at least all 4 in a row with no "strangers" between us, and we WILL be landing that day on STT and WILL make it to a ferry. I'm not sure what time the Suttons close on a Sunday evening, but barring other changes will have to let them know the schedule!

bummer....but like you said, once you land you'll forget about all the flight problems by the time that free shot of Cruzan rum hits your belly at the airport!
