Addicted to STJ?
phyl welcome back
Hey if ya gotta have an addiction St John not a bad one to have. We have found St John to be just as cheap as vacations to the Mainland beaches in the states, as long as we can get cheap airfare. For us it's all about the beaches no fancy meals, eat in most of the time, bring lots of our own food, just a few drinks out. Hard to justify a painkiller for 8 bucks when I can get a bottle of Cruzan for 7 and party at the villa and have some of the greatest views around while grillin some T bones. All while watchin the sunset and listenin to some KC with my honey . Like that Old Milwakee commercial used to say IT DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS just insert a Presedente or whatever caribbean beer ya like. That's how we roll when on island, nothin wrong with spending more when ya go, the locals will appreciate the business, but this allows us a couple trips a year
*heavy sigh*
We haven't been to STJ since Jan. 09 and I wish we had plans to go back. This year we went to Anguilla, which was beautiful, but... it wasn't STJ. I keep coming back to this forum, torturing myself. Hubby doesn't like to go back to the same vacation place over and over. Our first trip to STJ was Dec. 07 and we enjoyed it so much I was able to convince him to return in Jan. 09. It's getting harder and harder to find a new vacation place every year that has everything STJ has: great beaches, great scuba/snorkeling, great food and wonderful people.
Maybe I'll just have to take a trip on my own!!

My name is KatieH and I am a St John addict. I am longing for another trip. Unfortunately while I'm longing for St John, my bank account is addicted to the remora's education and fencing hobby.
Sad but true - Survivor was our at home date night for years... we'd put the child to bed early and enjoy a special dinner and the show. Now the child is old enough to watch with us

We would watch Survivor with our boys growing up...now they are at college at we text each other every Thurs night about who we love and who we hate. Its hard to have things in common b/w moms and sons sometimes but this was always a fun thing for us. Yay, Survivor.
And, Lost...it was the island thing that attracted me. It is kinda...no real crazy, but it's the one thing (besides Survivor) that I watch EVERY week.

If anybody on STJ wants good eats and a really cool place to go on STT, which is also very reasonable, near Red Hook, Lattitue 18 is the place.
They're right on the water and dinners are delicious. If you have your own car, it's an adventure in itself to find it.
Good music too! Can't wait to get there myself.

All this talk about the addiction and my addiction just gets stronger. Oh it drives me nuts that I have to wait until May to get there. One good thing, it is in reach baby.
I find St. John a magical place for many reasons. I have been to other islands and never really experienced what I experience on St. John. When I am on St. John I really feel the weight of the world lift off my shoulders. My stress and any trouble somehow get washed out by the sounds of gentle clap of water against the shores of the beautiful beaches. Then comes Capt Kirk dancing along the beach cranking his KC out over his phone while Teresa lay under some palm tree alone wondering why Andy hasn’t run down the beach yet with his arse hanging out and waving a noodle at a dingy full of cruise ship people that somehow found our little hiding spot. Sorry, got a little sideways there as I flashed back to Forum Beach Day last year at Honeymoon.
Seriously, there are many reasons why so many of us have this addiction. It is a great place with great people. Play it right and it can be done in an affordable way.

Phyl - My daughter was on Survivor a few years ago (Angie/Palau) and she says St John is better!! She said the snorkeling in the South Pacific was fantastic but St John is pretty darned good and much closer/affordable, plus you don't have to sleep in the sand with about 19 other stinky people. Well, at least not if you don't drink too much...hahahahaha!
I'm making my 4th trip this year with a group of nine addicts. We bring costs down by bringing some food items from home. We bought New York strip steaks for $4.99 a lb here and the same cut was $14.99 a lb on St John. That can save alot with that many people. Every year we take fewer clothes in the suitcase and more food. LOL. Last year hubby de-boned two turkey breasts and froze them. They traveled very nicely and cook in under an hour on the grill. I also made a huge batch of meatballs at home and froze them in a ziplock bag. That makes for a quick dinner after a day at the beach....plop the thawed meatballs into some sauce from a jar and heat it up while making your pasta, a bag salad and some garlic bread. Yum. Cram as much snack food as you can into your luggage too because those tend to be expensive. I took a variety of cheeses from home in our cooler bag, smoked almonds, peanuts, granola bars, etc. All good "beach food". Just take them out of bulky boxes or cans and pack in ziploc bags because it comforms much easier that way. I also took a batch of the big tea bags for making iced tea. I'd make it up the night before and reuse our water bottles to freeze it. You have "ice" for your cooler to take to the beach plus something thirst quenching to drink.
You can also pick up some great inexpensive dinners from Candi's or Uncle Joe's to take back to the villa. And we like to hit Margarita Phil's for at least one dinner. The prices are reasonable and the food is good - had the best tuna tacos there last year. Drinking at the villa is much cheaper too....plus you don't have to navigate those hills with one eye closed to get back home!
