Building a new house is exciting but...
Here a part more of the continuing story – building a new house:
Caused to the weather the outside walls are not finished. They cannot build, if the temperature is more than 2 grades below zero. But some days it has been about zero, so something has been done
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/QP9 ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvh ... 2.JPG"></a>
But as you can see at the icicles, it’s still cold.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/Ka3 ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvh ... 6.JPG"></a>
Now it’s nearly a real house. We have got the front door! We have chosen only to have one entrance with a small door, because we want to save square meters, but also because it’s more difficult for thieves to come in and out of such a door. Unfortunately we have to think of that too, because no one is living nearby, so a thief can work in peace there. We have two doors more out to the terrace, one from the sleeping room and one from the dining room. But the terrace doors have locks, so if they are locked, you cannot open them without a key. So again, we try to make it so difficult as possible for thieves. We also will install a kind of alarm.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/Vcc ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvi ... 4.JPG"></a>
The tiles in the shower cabinet are up, and the tiles on the floor are finished. In this week they will be jointed. I cannot show the tiles on the floor, because they are covered with cardboard, but here a pic of one of the cabinets
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/xUp ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvj ... 7.JPG"></a>
The walls, where we are going to have refrigerator, freezer, ovens and shelves are finished too.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/Plp ... site"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvk ... 8.JPG"></a>
In this week they will begin to make the ceilings (just to prepare you - I don’t think you will like them), and several other things will be done, so it will be exciting to come again next week.
To save money we do the painting ourselves, so in the weekend we needed to start painting, because it’s easier to do before the ceilings are up. The walls weren’t so dry, as they should be, but we painted a border in the top of the walls. We also painted around the windows and the doors- again it’s easier to do before they will be jointed. Before painting we have to brush all the walls to remove loose mortar, then we gave “primer”, and after that most of it was painted two times. So there was a lot to do and both father, mother and son were working.

Hubby is always very careful about covering things to prevent paint on it, so it also take time.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/-s8 ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvm ... 0.JPG"></a>
Late Sunday evening we could take pictures of the result. Here the sitting room:
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/JQb ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvo ... 6.JPG"></a>
We also took pictures to remember, where the points were placed - perhaps difficult to remember it after the ceilings are up.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/PSk ... site"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S1Yvm ... 5.JPG"></a>
I can tell you that the weekend was funny an unusual. We have never been sleeping in the house in wintertime, it’s not built for that, but it would take too long time to drive home to sleep, so we decided to do it. But it was about 3 grades beneath zero and a strong wind was blowing, so it was as if, it was much colder. So when I went to bed, it was in underclothes with long legs and arms, and I had a blanket beneath me and 2 duvets over me. (I slept very well! ) The worst was going to the toilet, because you have to go outside first, and we could not get running water on the toilet because a pipe was frozen. So we only had a bucket with water in, which we could use to pour in the toilet and to our personal hygiene- which I must admit wasn’t in top these 2 days. Also when we made food, we had to do it in our tool shed. We use a plastic can with water there, but could not use it, because the water was frozen, so we had to place it before a heater first. And it was terrible cold in the shed. Have you tried to make food with gloves on? I can promise you it’s difficult!
Fortunately the new house was warmed up, so we could eat there. And we will do it in the same way next weekend too!

Despite of the snow and the cold weather there is still progress in our building process.
The tile work is finished, the doors and windows are jointed and the ceilings are up.
Outside it is not totally finished. We still miss 2 layers on the roof and some of the zinc uncovering.
It has to wait for better weather. They cannot do it, when it’s frost, and just now it’s nearly impossible for a truck to drive up to us due to the slippery road. It gives problems, and we too had to take another way than we use to, and our son destroyed the bumper
, when his car skidded into a stone. So he had to walk part of the way up to our house.
But we wish to finish our painting before we get the kitchen and the bathroom etc., so we continue working every weekend. It has really helped us what we have done before the ceiling were up. Unfortunately some of the walls are still not dry enough to paint, even though we have had a big electric heater blowing all the time together with the geothermal heat. So now we try with a dehumidifier to see if it can help.
We think that the builders have done a nice work, but I had to confess that I’m a little disappointed, because I can see that we have made some mistakes. We have really used a lot of time investigating everything to make the house as perfect as possible. Seeing the result I’m satisfied with most of it, but especially two things annoys me. I say “me”, because we have some discussions at home, hubby think, I’m too hysterical.
The biggest problem is the bars in the windows. The design in the houses our master builder normally build, is that the windows and doors have bars across, so of course he proposed that to our house too. It looked very nice, when we saw it on the drawing, but what we haven’t been thinking of was that if I’m sitting inside on a chair, I can see the trees and the grass etc, but NOT the sea
. The bars cover this view! In our little old house we had unhindered view, so it annoys me so much that we don’t have it in the new expensive house. I so much enjoy to relax - perhaps reading a book - looking at the sea. Especially the 2 big windows in the room are tricky, because you can open a part of the window, so this makes the bars there wider. I want 2 new windows there without any bars, but it cost a lot of money, and hubby say no “it’s ridiculous- you can see the sea if you stand up, or you can go outside”. At the same time the law says that in every room you need to have windows you can use as fire exit. So we still have discussions about what to do!
The next thing, which annoys me, is that the colour white isn’t a clear concept. I haven’t been thinking of that. We have ordered white windows (inside) and white doors. The walls are painted white too. But when we got the doors, which are from another firm than the windows, it shows up that the doors are more cream- coloured/yellow than white. I thought that they have made a mistake and want new doors, but when I looked further in the brochure, I could see that in the pictures of the doors, they looked white, but on a special page all the colours were shown and the white colour was correctly shown as cream coloured. I hadn’t seen that, so it was me, who had made a mistake. I phoned the firm but they could not change the doors because they were already installed.
It really disturbs my look to see these yellow doors in the middle of white walls and white windows. I so much regret that we haven’t ordered grey doors, and I don’t think hubby is ready to offer the price to have them painted. Are some of you likewise me- the colours have to be perfect matching
?
Now it must be time to show some pics:
Here the windows where the bars are a problem.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/W2d ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S3CHF ... 7.JPG"></a>
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/DEH ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S3CHG ... 8.JPG"></a>

As I told we have ceilings to the roof nearly in all rooms, there are tiles on the floor, and the walls are stone. Such a combination means that the acoustics will be very bad. When you have noisy children, it can be difficult for other to hear anything and have a conversation, and if you move a chair the loud seems very high. So we had to think of that.
In sport centres, stables etc. it’s common to use a special ceiling- a mix of excelsior and cement – which takes a lot of the noise. Now a Danish firm has started to produce this material to private houses too, and we have chosen to use it in our house. I’m pretty sure that it will not be your taste, but we think it’s fine for a house like ours, and I assure you that it reduce the noise very much.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/Lyg ... site"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S3CHE ... 4.JPG"></a>
The builders are nearly finished inside, so we have made a temporary kitchen inside the house.
It was very cold to make food in a leaky tool shed without any heat, so it’s really an improvement to be able to cook in the house even though it’s still very basic.
<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/7Y6 ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/S3CHA ... 9.JPG"></a>

Sorry Linne, I have to side with your husband on the window bars
Maybe he would put higher or lower legs on your chairs so your sight-line is above or below the bar?
You see, in our relationship, my husband is the Linne and I am the Mr. Linne.
My husband is obsessed with a soffit (a boxed in area to run pipes) at our cabin. In order to put in the second floor bathroom, the contractor had no choice but to build a small soffit next to a support beam. It isn't visible from 95% of the room. Husband can't stand it and I fear one day I will find him with a sledge hammer in his hands.
I understand your feelings about the not-so-white doors. Would it be possible for you to repaint the doors yourself?
The house looks lovely, window bars and all!

yes, we could repaint them, but it will never be the same quality as the painting from the fabric. If we pay a professional for spray-painting them, it will cost nearly the same as a new door.
But I have been told from a couple, who have had the same problem as us, that they get used to the different colour at the doors, and don’t see it anymore. Perhaps it will be the same for me, when we get furniture etc..
The bars, which disturb the view, are still a problem for me. But the owner of the building firm has visited our house, and he promised that he would see, if he could find a solution. It seems for me, as if he thought that their architect should have seen the problem. So I cross my fingers!
The weather still gives us troubles. They cannot finish the roof etc., before the snow disappears.
And the road up to us is very slippery, so that big cars cannot drive there.
But we are still making progress.
Most of the walls are painted now, the taps in the bathrooms and the toilets are installed, and a few lamps are put up.

Very exiting.

.
Seeing the progress you are making despite the snow and cold weather makes following your building journal all the more interesting. The house is looking very attractive in the snow, and I hope that you will share some pics when spring and summer arrive. Thanks for continuing to share this experience with the forum.

CA girl, I’m impressed that you could see that the lamps are like the ceilings

We have been lucky finding them, people admire them, and they were so cheap, an offer in a supermarket, about 35 dollars for the small ones in the guestrooms and about 55 dollars for the big ones in the corridors.
Not much happens just now. We should have had kitchen and bathroom last week, and hubby took 2 vacation days, so that we could be there, while it was installed. The 2 carpenters were there too, but the truck with the units couldn’t drive up the rise, it was too slippery, because of a snowfall during the night

But the landscape is beautiful:

Oh, how nice to have a pool, and it's a hard job to build a deck. How did you take the photo? Can you see your house so close up on Google?shoemak38 wrote:<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/27134057@N04/4423661104/" title="house by SHOEMAK38, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2786/442 ... 6261fb.jpg" width="500" height="295" alt="house"></a>
We made the deck ourselves in our house at home, but have decided to hire someone to do it in Boennerup.

Your right it's from Google, they also do street view, which is great for checking out a area around a hotel
