Best burger debate
A friend of mine just returned from a last minute "get out of the snow" trip to STJ.
They swore up & down that Island Blues burgers are better than Skinny Legs.
I've had plenty of delicious burgers at Skinny's, but never tried one at Island Blues.
So?
Anyone have another favorite burger joint on STJ?

I know this is probably heresy on this board, but frankly I have never found the Skinny Legs burger all that great. I think the reputation of the burger far outweighs the actual burger itself - as with any legend, it's always a let down compared to the hype. (Having said this, I have never had the burger at Island Blues either, so I really have nothing to compare it to.)
Now, who has the best Mahi sandwich?

Actually, I think all burgers are basically the same...it's WHERE you are eating it that matters the most! A blue cheese burger at Skinny's after a morning snorkel is the best in the world. Heck, a bag of cheetos and a Presidente would be deemed superior at that time and location!!
But Pia and Les have the right idea....I'm going to give a G burger a shot in a few months! I'm betting it's gonna be wonderful....

I pretty much agree that it has to do with the place, the time and the people rather than the burger itself. Really, how much better can one place's burger be than another place's? On a consistent basis.
Also, the first couple of bites of a burger, when it's still hot and I'm still really hungry, are the only really memorable ones for me. The last bites of a burger, like the last sips of a beer, aren't the stuff that memories are made of.
Skinny's somehow got established as having the best burger. This has been perpetuated over the years by online forums, guidebooks and cruise ship employees. Tourists are given "insider" info by "people in the know" and the self-perpetuating myth goes on and on. People occasionally shout "Skinny's burgers are nothing special", much like shouting "The Emperor has no clothes", but the island legend has had too much momentum so far.
Now with conch fritters it's a different matter.

The Skinny Legs burger with the cheese and the sauteed something-or-others (this burger has a specific name but I can't think of it), it was fatty and cheesy and when I picked it up and took a bite, the juices dripped down my arm and I couldn't put it down or the good stuff would fall out of it and the bun was soaking up all the burger-licious wonderfulness.....
I vote Skinny's.
But I've never had the new Island Blues burger.
The best Mahi I had on island is a tie-
The Mahi Rueben at Miss Lucy's.
The blackened Mahi sandwich at Hightide.

I had them both last month and I have to say it depends on what kind of mood you're in as to which you might prefer at any given time. I had the Skinny's burger while sitting at the bar and watching a football game. The burger was fat, juicy, tasty, and absolutely hit the spot with about 4 beers. The Island Blues burger was consumed on an evening when we were having dinner there. It was fat, juicy, tasty, and absolutely hit the spot with about 4 beers. So the difference was... I don't know. They were both great...

Sounds like we could deep fry your gym socks and if we served it with about 4 beers you'd be good to goRandy in MD wrote:I had them both last month and I have to say it depends on what kind of mood you're in as to which you might prefer at any given time. Ya'll are right in as far as even eating a fried gym sock while on STJ. It's all good!
I'll have to them try the G spot, as well as Island Blues this spring.
Had one last Nov at BB and it was good, but Skinny's are more to my liking.
I think my all time faves are when My Sweet Amy & I grill 'em up ourselves on the deck at the villa.
Delicious memories in the making, devoured with potato salad, a pickle, & a bag of chips!
(Not to mention a few chilly brews...
