Attacked by a deer at Trunk Bay!!!

Post by jectac »

On Saturday we were sitting on Trunk Bay. My father's wife had her head buried in her book, while I sat nearby napping. When all of a sudden I heard my hubby call Karen's name. Just then, we both looked up and wham!!! A deer, small rack, had come out of the brush onto the beach and was re-entering the brush. He tried jumping Karen's chair and hit her in the arm, while kicking sand all over me!!!

She (Karen) now has bruise on her arm. CRAZY!!!

Kids started singing "Grandma got run over by a reindeer, reading her book on trunk bay......"

Still on island.... will post report when we return.

Well, this kind of behavior might get the National Park's attention focussed on the rapidly increasing deer problem. The population has increased by at least 500% in the past 10 year, and the impacts on vegetation are becoming very noticeable.

Wow, glad she is OK.

Hugo, I have definitely noticed the increase in the deer population. We used to almost never see them, and now they are all over the place. Last time we stayed at Caneel Bay we counted 10 deer grazing on the lawn at the same time.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

STJ is becoming more and more like home! I live in what seems like the deer hunting capital of the world.

Now I can add deer to my nightime driving worries.

Just curious, good or bad impacts? I suspect the loss of ground cover would be an erosion concern.

When talking to our local ranger, he mentioned that because "our" deer are thinning out certain plants and trees, he is seeing an explosion of other species that now have the room and light to thrive.

It sounds like Santa brought his crew to STJ like Kenny does at the end of his tour. They need to teach those "animals" how they should behave on a public beach!

While she is ok, this could really become a problem..we all know how the over population of deer has created problems. Sad but true..how is STJ going to control the deer population?[/quote]
