What books do you read on island?
I tend to read fast and hard, rather than watch tv anytime. 20 days, the books start getting heavy. Think Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow," or "Life of Pi," or (break the sci-fi rule for great literature) Gibson's "Neuromancer."
Look up the poem "Desiderata."
Evanovich? Her MB'esque heroine is quite the woman. Her heroine's most interesting love interest is Puerto Rican! The tart!

I feel like a total illeriate. I love a good book, and will take notes on your favorites, but when I go to STJ I usually only get a week and I would rather watch the water, the people, the birds, the goats, etc. I usually take a paperback for the plane, but I can read at home. I am always amazed at the people that sit on a beach for hours and have their nose in a book. Why???
If I had 20 days, I'd be looking for books. But with only a week, no way.
Can you tell I've had 2 glasses of wine and I'm bored. I guess I need a good book.

I'd recommend any of Carl Hiaasen's books. Even set in south florida, they have an island vibe and are perversly funny. Try to do them in order if ya can but if not, the can't miss ones are 'Native Tongue' 'Sick Puppy' or 'Double Whammy'.
For the SciFi fan, get the list of the Hugo and Nebula award winners, and pick one of them that you haven't read. I just got a few winners that I overlooked for 20 years.

If you want a light read, Kite Runner is not. It is deep and has some disturbing parts, however definitely a worthy read. If youare into LIGHT fun stuff for the beach, I'd save it for another time.nothintolose wrote:I LOVED "A Walk in The Woods"...laughed my a$$ off so many times during that book - may bring it to read again.
Flip-Flop - just bought "The Kite Runner" - didn't know if I'd want to read that while on island though - just want something easy. What do you think?
Wish the last Harry Potter was out for the trip but it won't be - those books are AWESOME!!!!

I agree with whoever mentioned the Secret Life of Bees...such a great book.
I am a big fan of southern novels as well.
I totally dig Ranger! Would take him over Joe Morelli any day. Not that I'd boot Morelli out, mind you!RickG wrote:I tend to read fast and hard, rather than watch tv anytime. 20 days, the books start getting heavy. Hey Cypressgirl, I'm with you. While I usually read a good amount, especially on vacation, last year on STJ I didn't even crack the spine of a book. Think I took it the first day to the beach but I ended up just staring out to sea
So I stopped kidding myself after that.
At night I was just too dog tired to read!

You all should check out Jennifer Weiner's books. I went to high school with her.

for those in reading groups, did you read the book called The Reading Group? Written by an english girl who's name escapes me. Elizabeth something. Very good.
Would like to be in a group but I am a slow reader and always fear not being done in time! Too much pressure for me - like going back to school!

Love her books. They are the ones based in Philly right? Maybe I am confused.Xislandgirl wrote:You all should check out Jennifer Weiner's books. I went to high school with her.
I think Ranger is smokin' hot too. That's why I usually hate when they make movies out of books I love as the characters are always better in my head. EXCEPT Matt McConaughey in A Time to Kill...he was the living embodiment of Jake for me!
Speaking of A Time to Kill, John Grishams early stuff is very good for the beach!
