Vehicle Rental on St. Thomas

Post by kklay »

Hello Forum Friends! I'm finalizing reservations for our upcoming trip to St. John. We're down to vehicle rental. I have found some vehicles on St. John, however I've received some very good rates from Dependable on St. John. There are six of us and it appears there is a nice savings just by taking the car barge as opposed to taking the "people" taxi/ferry and renting a vehicle on St. John. I have searched a little thru past postings for feedback, however I still would like more viewpoints on pros/cons on vehicle renting - St. John or St. Thomas. I would appreciate ALL feedback! Thanks in advance for your help! Oh - we've always rented a vehicle on St. John in the past 12 or so visits to the island.

Apart from the fact the actually driving on STT would probably give me a heart attach, the main reason we don't rent on STT is that if you have mechanical problems you're kind of SOL. It could mean that you'd have to pretty much lose a day having to go over to STT to get the problem fixed, not to mention the car ferry expense back and forth. My vacation time is too important to me to have to deal with that. I know there are lots of others who want the convience of renting on STT but I'm not one of them. {I'm also not a cooler person so I guess saving a few bucks doesn't freek me out.} I also prefer to give my rental car money to STJ businesses.

We like Dependable. What are they putting you in for 6 people? I would bring a bungee net or something like that in case you need to strap luggage to the roof. The savings are substantial - probably close to $20 per person each way with taxi, tips , and ferry vs $30 or so each way for the car barge.

Steve,

Actually, we are looking at renting two vehicles, we expect at least one more friend to make the trip - for a total of 7. We are being quoted Grand Vitaras (Suzuki). Any experience with these? The one concern I have is if there is any mechanical problems - hasn't happened in the past with our rentals on St. John, and if the vehicles are in good shape, I wouldn't expect problems with the Dependable vehicles either. A couple of the people traveling in our group have expressed that concern.

Hi kklay,

We have rented the Suzuki Gran Vitaras from Dependable before
and have reserved one again
for our April visit. It was a great choice
for 3 of us the 1st time and this next visit they'll
be 4 of us. Handled the roads and hills just fine!

In my past we have never experienced any mechanical
probs except for a flat tire and that was on our last day!
We prefer to rent on STT while staying on STJ
cuz of the ease of loading the luggage once each way and
for the one-stop shopping on our way to Redhook.
Plus on your departure day you have transportation
if you have a later flight!

Have fun!

We have rented 4 years in a row from them and we have 6 people usually. Their rates are about $150-200 less than STJ agencies plus the savings in taxi fares for 6,not to mention the freedom to drive on ST thomas and the convenience of not sleping bags to and fro from airport to taxi to ferry to porter to rental car ...etc etc.

I forgot to mention the bag schlepping which is my wife's #1 positive for renting on STT.
