Getting to and from Catherinberg area

Post by SusanNJ »

My husband and I may be looking into renting a villa in the Catherinberg area. Now this will be our "first time" when it comes to renting a villa. We usually stay at Caneel and the Westin. We will be renting a vehicle during our stay, however if we wanted to go into town for dinner, has anyone ever used a taxi to and from this area?

I am sure we could always drive, but I just am concerned with the roads being very windy and dark at night - so maybe taking a taxi to and from for dinner would be better?

I seriously doubt if you'll get a taxi out in Catherineberg. I would plan on driving. I don't know what John Head Road looks like these days. Last year when we were there in June it was is pretty good shape except for the bottom of the road. It's usually not that bad unless you're really far down into Catherineberg.

I've stayed in several villas up there and the views are stunning. It's my favorite place on the island with Bordeaux Mountain a close second. What villa are you staying in?

We stayed at Cinnamon Tarn 2 years ago and the road to that villa is pretty good. No turns, and not steep to that point. We found it to be a convenient location to drive to Cruz Bay or Coral Bay. Plus, the views are amazing!!

We're staying in that area for the first time on our next trip. Did a "villa visit" the last time we were on island & was blown away with the views....absolutely amazing!! Felt like we were in the middle of a "Chamber of Commerce postcard"!! The road was not bad at all. Will let you know more after we return.

I would like to do the same thing next month. There were a lot of houses that we were really interested in but we felt that we do too much running about (beach, lunch, villa, town for dinner, villa...) to stay in that location. Maybe next trip.

PA Girl....we visited 3 villas in one morning with 2 different reps.; just worked out perfectly. Great/easy way to get a feel for some places we have considered staying in the future.
I was a little concerned about my precious vacation-time not being too taken up but it was actually fun cause I saw areas I had not seen before & was a bit of an adventure that was not too time-consuming.

Island Stones is a fabulous house!! You really will need 4WD down there though. That house is actually closer to the Northshore road but that stretch of the road is very rough. The bumps are part of the island charm though, right?

Maybe some else can say for sure but I believe that house used to be called Jungle Stones and it was completely redone, enlarged and renamed Island Stones.

The house would more than make up for a few bumps in the road for me.

I think we (well my husband) will be able to handle the drive. I wanted to be closer to Cruz Bay, but after looking at the pictures of Island Stone - I figure its okay its a little bit further away!

Actually its not Jungle Stone, its Island Stones (just as beautiful), http://www.villavacations.net/detail_stones.html

Yes we are sharing it with another couple. It would be a bit S$$$ for just the two of us!

I would not hesitate to rent in Catherineberg. It is actually only about 10 minutes to Cruz Bay, once you get out to Centerline Rd. When you turn off Centerline, it will be a very slow 5 to 7 minute trip to Island Stones. The road is not bad, its just a liitle bumpy in spots.
We have stayed in quite a few of the houses in Catherineberg. We were lucky enough to stay in Island Stones when it was Villa Valentine, (circa 1999) and even luckier to stay in Jungle Stone when it was just a "pebble", (circa 1998,) compared to what it is today.
Island Stones is actually near the top of John's Head Rd, with a long driveway just beyond Cinnamon Tarm and Island Sun.
Dont miss this opportunity. The views are phenomenal!!
And the villa doent look to shabby either.
