Our upcoming trip - checking in and checked bags question
Our upcoming trip - checking in and checked bags question
Ok, bare with me. The following questions will likely make all you ff groan at my ignorance but I need an education. (I could call customer service but that may cause me to bang my head on my desk)
We have never, and likely never will, been able to do carry-on only. Checking bags works for us. Which is why I am clueless about the following:
We are a mere 38 days from our next STJ trip and in the course of pulling info together, I noticed I could pre-pay for our bags on-line if I check-in on-line. We are flying USAir, if that matters.
How does this work? If I check in on-line and pay for our bags, do I still stand in line at the check-in counter to physically hand the bags over to be tagged?

Hi PA Girl,
1st have a wonderful trip!
Just flew US Airways to Ga over holidays. You check in on-line but still have to go to the tkt counter at airport and use the kiosks to print out your boarding passes and get luggage tags from agent & turn over the bags to them. Does this make sense? Nope, but if you wait to check bags at airport you pay at least $5 more per bag ! We paid $70 for 2 pcs of reg. luggage for r/t to Ga. Why they don't just add the fee to the price of tkts & get it over with is beyond me...
Also, don't know about going to STT but to Ga, only get soft drinks for free, no snacks. So bring something to munch on with you or eat before getting on plane.
It'a only the means to get there, once you get there, you'll forget all about the "ride" getting there, it's worth it all.

No ticker anymore. Next vac will prob. be the Fl Keys.
Wow, $70 for two bags seems high. As a disclaimer I don't fly US Air, I fly American every week and have status so I don't pay to check bags. I just read an article this week that Delta and American are increasing the cost to check bags.
I couldn't find the article but here is the link to fees for US Air. Looks like it will be around $50 for two bags.

Got it. Same process we experienced flying AA to San Juan, except we didn't pre-pay and the husband put all the bags under his name so we ended up spending even more to check the bags.tipsy wrote:Hi PA Girl,

I can't remember the USAir cost per 1st bag because the website lists three different prices depending on when you purchased the ticket. I think it is $15 for our first bag. Or maybe $20.
Hi Parafins & Moose,
Yes $70 is alot, going down we were able to check in on-line paid $15 per (2bags) but coming back, daughters computer was on blink so had to check in at airport, $20 per bag. Why $5 more when you still are doing it yourself at the kiosks? Who knows. All the agents do,is print out the baggage tag and load the bag on the belt.
Watched many people coming up to the ticket gate to board w/too many bags and the airline agent would take the passengers extra piece, tag it and send it down to the guys on tarmac to load on plane. No charge to passenger. The gate agents can't take any form of money but can't let you on the plane w/ too many bags either or they get fined big time. By that time, it's too late to send you back to the ticket counter to check the bag. Very smart don't you think?
Like said before, just add the fee to the price and get it over with. Saw the news too that alot of airlines are increasing the fees.

One more little piece of advise. PRINT A COPY
OF YOUR PREPAID RECEIPT and take it with
you to airport. We fly USAirways out of Charlotte
every time. First time I prepaid...got to
airport and their computor showed no record
of it...had my copy thank goodness or they
were going to charge my C/C again. Second
time we prepaid they was no problem.
Biggest advantage of prepaying ... it is
a little cheaper.
Have Fun !!
