Bob & Sharon's Trip Report
Dear Island Friends,
We returned from a three-week escape to the Virgin Islands on Dec 20th. The trip started with two weeks on Virgin Gorda where we rented a house near Spring Bay and enjoyed snorkeling all over the island and eating at the Mineshaft, Island Pot and Chez Bamboo. Shopping is better now on VG thanks to the new Bucks wholesale. We also took a delightful boat excursion with “Double D” to Cooper Island, which is always fun and educational with David who knows so much about the islands and their wildlife. We then ferried to Anegada where we stayed at Neptune’s treasure for two nights feasting on lobster and the freshest fish in the islands. We even saw flamingoes on that remarkably wild and uninhabited island. We finished up at Caneel Bay on St John which is summer camp for adults done right. The best restaurant on the island La Toppa in Cruz bay. Also delicious was Uncle Joe’s Barbeque and the Mojo Café which was a real treat.
It was marvelous, as always. We photographed and identified 159 fish and other wildlife this year, up from 122 last year. The pictures and the trip’s log can be found in a folder behind our website at the link:

Hope you enjoy them!

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Would you do 2 weeks on Virgin Gorda again?
Was this your first time at Caneel? We're going to finish our STJ villa trip in May with 4 nights at Caneel and look forward to this experience as we've never stayed there.
Thanks for your interesting trip report and wonderful pictures.

Virgin Gorda and Caneel
We would stay for 2 weeks in VG again in a heart beat. It is a wonderful island with great snorkeling, very friendly people and good food! We have stayed at Caneel three times and will again in the future. The snorkeling at Caneel is spectacular and the breakfast is superb.
Now that sounds like an ideal trip to me - we are completely jealous too that you got back so soon.
Great idea to finish up at Caneel after "roughing" it in the BVIs.
I liked the shots of the "roads" in Anegada - made me realize I hadnt taken any. Cool that you got to see the flamingos there.
Cow Wreck has my vote as the best beach bar in the Caribbean. Gotta love the good folks at Neptunes.
We got to get back to snorkel some of those spots in VG. Looks like you had the Fat Virgin to yourselves! That would be cool to see serious wave action at Spring Bay like you did.
Agree that there is no better place to have some good ribs than during sunset on the Mine Shaft deck. Were the chickens climbing up into the trees? And, who manages that VG villa? Is it one of the Guavaberry properties?
Thanks.

When we come to place where the sea and the sky collide
Throw me over the edge and let my spirit glide

I always like reading your reports and looking at your fish pictures. The flame box crab is cool, I have never spotted one before.
I am fairly certain that the fish you marked as "unknown" is a juvenile dusky damselfish. Look at page 124 in the Humann guide and see if you agree.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

Dear liamsaunt,
You are so correct! A thousand times through the book and i missed that one. I often see these in an octopuses garden and have never known what they are. Thank you for the ID. I will now update the page!
