Sago Palms
Hi everyone, was wondering if I had read a trip report a couple of months ago about Sago Palms?
Looked in the villa reviews and did not see anything.
I then googled it and on trip advisor in 2007 something about bug issue. Looking for any input on this house.
Last trip we stayed at Dream Come True and loved it.
Now that I have become a full time stay at home grandma, looking for something in this price range.
Thanks for any help.

Go to search, enter sago, all forums and then click post. You will see alot of hits on Sago. It is a little hard to get to and is about halfway up the mountian overlooking Jumbie. There are ships that go by and the small cessna's from San Juan can be seen flying to the BVI,s. PHPV is great to deal with. Have not been there in almost 2 years now (been doing other trips) but I have to say once you get the St John fever you will never get rid of it!

Sago is my all time favorite because of the view
from everywhere. We have stayed twice and our third trip is planned for June, and have not
had any bug problems. Some people don't like the
road to the house.
It is 2 miles from town right past the medical
center. There is another house being built right
beside Sago. They have been building for several
years. Maybe Jimmy can give you an update on it.
Also ask Private Homes. They are very helpful.

You'll love it! It's Wandas' favorite for more than a few great reasons!
Yes, the driveway/road to the villa is a little challenging, but you'll find that with 99% of the rentals on STJ anyway. You'll undoubtedly have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, so do yourself the favor and use the 4WD gear in getting to/from the home. To me, slow & steady wins the race. (It's honestly a piece of cake going slow in 4WD.)
The "bug issue" that you read about is a little bit exxagerated, i'm guessing.
Of course if you land after a rainy spell,(like we did) bugs will naturally be present anywhere on island.
The villa company sprayed the place well before we got there, but there are obvious rules to follow to keep any new critters from getting into your rooms;
Don't leave the inside lights on at night!
If you're up & about in the villa at night, keep the doors closed!
Heck, keep 'em closed during the day, too!
My fiancee & I didn't experience any different types of problems/issues than we've found in any of the other 10 places we've stayed.
I most certainly don't want you to get spooked about the "bug issue", the home was absolutely incredible.
As Wanda mentioned, the views are astounding.

We stayed there as well and enjoyed it. But, if you're a light sleeper then you may need to run the AC just for white noise to block out the sound from all the critters outside. Lots of tree frogs (which I like) that really make a chorus at night - can be very loud especially after a rain. Some people can't sleep because of that, so be prepared. Yes, the road is challenging. The construction next door on the house the owners have torn down twice is annoying and hopefully will get done soon. They've been working on it for years off and on. It didn't bother us too much accept a couple days when we just wanted to stay at the villa, but the construction pounding was very unpleasant. Sometimes the work going on is not noisy and you may be there during a quiet week, but no guarantees.
I just realized where Sago Palms is located. My DH and I walked past it on our way down the Susannaberg Road/Trail. It does command a most fantastic view! I can't add anything about the inside, but I had serious envy as we viewed it from the outside. MahoJim, I now have a much better visual of you stumbling down the hill from that villa. It's not a bad walk down to Peace Hill and Denis Bay, in the light of day while sober. 
You could easily walk to Gibney and Hawksnest too, if you were so inclined.

I'm SURE it's one heck of a lot better while sober & under blue skies, but as I mentioned, I get pretty darn moronic after too many libations!
They were indeed working on the home next door while we were there, but it honestly had a zero effect during our stay. They were pretty slow at it, and usually knocked off @ 2:30-3.

Sago Palms was our favorite Villa, we have stayed at 2 other villas that were wonderful as well but Sago Palms was the best! We loved the location and the pool and deck area were wonderful. We just had two couples staying at the villa and it was perfect for us. We had no issues with bugs but we went in July. Good Luck!
