How naive can I be?!?!

Post by mahojim »

I sent a package to Mathayom from STJ. Catering by normal parcel post on Monday, 10/26 without insuring it!
He still has not received it, and I'm getting a little bit more than concerned about it. I was hoping he'd get it before we arrive this Saturday, now I'm worried that it's lost for good. Can't track it, bacause it wasn't insured. DUMB!!!
The man at the Post office told me it would be 5-7 business days...it's almost 2 weeks, now!
I realize how slow things can move down there, but with our arrival quickly approaching, my nerves are shot.
Just trying to do a Philly Boy a solid, ya' know?
Advice...?

Parcel Post can take up to 3 to four weeks. Priority is the way to have gone. I do business on both STT & StJ and everything is sent priority.

Flat rate priority is the way to go. I send a package for about $14 that includes the tracking number. I hope it gets there for you. Good luck!

Sorry Jimmy but Parcel Post is 6-8 weeks even though the PO in the States say 11 days (I believe) :(
Priority Mail is 6-10 days (on average) even though the PO will tell you 2-3 days.

"parcel post" means boat! It should be fine, but it may take AWHILE!

I can do you one better...we just got back from St. John and mailed our package (first class) as the post office said 2 weeks. We mailed it October 1st and guess what....it's still not there! It had our snorkling masks and bath products since we did carry ons! We mailed it to our villa managment company since it was a small package...I should probobly consider it "lost forever" now!

Sorry Jimmy.......I guess live and learn.
I always mail priority and with a receipt so I know it gets there. I learned that when I moved on island.
I hope it was nothing irreplaceable..

I was initially going to send it priority, but the Post master said the cost was close to $400.00 for 3-5 days shipping time. When he said @ $45.00-$50.00 for 5-7 business days, which do you think i was going to take?
Stupid,stupid,stupid.
I was really looking forward to hooking him up before we got there... :x

Saint, all is not lost - there is still hope :)

There are only 2 ways to send packages to St John - Priority or Parcel Post, there is no First Class, so when you send packages, and you ask for First Class, not Priority, it is automatically sent via Parcel Post, so if you mailed it Oct 1st and were told it was "regular/first class" mail it should arrive anywhere from November 15th to December 1st. The give away to me that it was sent via Parcel Post was that you were told 2 weeks as that is the "normal" amount of time Parcel takes - well, anywhere but to STJ - so do let the villa company know :)

Oh that's so sad, Jim! What was in the box? Maybe it can be rounded up somehow, or maybe it will magically show up. Priority mail has one price mailing boxes that, no matter how much the contents weigh, don't cost more than $15 bucks or so. For next time.....
I do hope they magically appear!

Another thing that's been brought up in posts before...

When addressing your package, do not use any type of punctuation in the address. So, for instance, if you're sending the package to Connections in Cruz Bay, address it as follows:

CONNECTIONS
PO BOX 37
CRUZ BAY VI 00831-0037

I now run any address through the "zip code lookup" feature on the usps.com website so that it's USPS compliant. Better yet, use their tools to print your Priority label/postage. It prints with a barcode and is trackable... plus it's slightly cheaper than paying for it at the post office.

Jimmy... I'm really sorry that the package hasn't arrived. You catch some bad breaks, but the optimist in me is hopeful that it'll arrive on island soon. I hope you and Sweet Amy have an excellent trip.

All hope is not lost. We sent a box priority mail on August 3 for an arrival August 13. It did not arrive while we were there, but we did receive it back home at the end of October, intact. Apparently, the box had a more interesting trip than we did.
