Here's a picture of an orchid that bloomed for me this summer. I've had the plant for YEARS and this is the first time it's bloomed. I was completely blown away by this flower, I had no idea something like this could come from that little plant! It stays outside year round, however it's in a sort of protected place on my patio.
Corsage anyone?

California Girl - that's an amazing flower!! Great job keeping it alive and healthy enough to produce a gorgeous flower!
i work in a 12-acre commercial greenhouse (it's more of a plant factory). it's fun
i'm a plant/bug lover

This one is really good, also. The annual printed catalog had a lot of useful information including germination times, etc. Some of this information might be on line now, not sure.

I am really enjoying this thread a lot.
BOATS - I can't figure out what the Floribunda might be.
WWWT - I can't figure out what that pink-leaved thing is in the photo. It looks familiar. I use a lot of variegated leafed plants for color. Lately I really like caladiums, but I can't get any more bulbs until spring.
California Girl - Awesome orchid. I don't know a darn thing about orchids. I should learn.
Thanks eveyone, this is a really enjoyable topic.

I don't think that flower had any fragrance at all. Sunnie, I love bugs, too! I was the only one at the Natural History Museum that wanted to hold the centipedes and stuff in the children's exhibit! LOL! I don't give those orchids any "special" care. Once in a while they get a little Miracle Gro, but not very often. And they get watered about once a week. Other than that, I sort of ignore them.

These are not special... except that they have survived my care and have rebloomed three times for me.
After losing two or three by overkill, I have learned
- that they need a very porous potting mix
- humidity is essential - Florida summers work well and I would expect St John to be ideal
- there are orchid specific fertilizers - one for the plant and another for blooms (I remember maybe once a year.)
- don't wet the blooms
- the foliage will burn quickly in direct sun;
I love the learning process...

I have a funny gardening story. We moved in to our current house in the late spring. The side yard had an existing small garden area with green bushes on either side. I never bothered to research what I had growing in the yard, and that fall I went ahead and planted what I thought were 200 red tulip bulbs in the plot. The next spring rolls around, the bulbs all come up....sounds good, right? Well, actually no...there must have been a mix up at the bulb sorting center because some of the tulips were red, and some were yellow! So, I had a Ronald McDonald themed flower garden.
But, it gets worse! It turned out that the bushes on either side of the garden plot were mid spring-flowering bushes....PURPLE flowering bushes that bloomed at the same time as the tulips! So I had a red and yellow tulip garden flanked by big purple flowering bushes. Not my finest gardening moment.

It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
I garden but don't have the patience for seeds. I tried spreading my Columbine seeds, daylily seeds etc last year and- nothin! Besides, I know I would either neglect seedlings or overcare for them- either way, I'd kill em.
Taking pictures in my garden and in my back woods is a hobby of mine. I have some great hosta leaf pictures and even made a hosta leaf sculpture!
I love taking photos in the yard this time of year especially- the hydrangea blooms are turning pink, bright red & orange leaves are falling on the green grass and sparkle with dew in the AM, mushrooms are popping up and mixing with acorns, dragonflys are everywhere... so fun!

those are awesome! i am big fan of the close up zoom in as far as possible! i got some pics of a dragonfly on a leaf last weekend and a small bettle in my hydrangea too. i need to get myself a better camera though. i can't get as close as i'd like with the one i have.
i don't post pictures here cuz honestly it's a pain in the butt. i'm not very tech savvy and having to take pictures, download pictures, post links etc, etc, ugh.
it took me the longest time to post pictures to my facebook account
