Your favorite thing to do on the Cruz Bay side...?
Early breakkie at Tamarind (usually eggs benedict with spicy bloody mary); stroll down to the water; watch the ferry disembark... It's different every time, but always a wonderful experience.
Later on we love to watch the Red Sox at Woody's - they subscribe to NESN and usually show the game. The Tap Room is another place to grab a cold one and relax - as if there's a lack of places like that

I'm on board with JJ's. Great food, and unbelievable bloody Marys!
Don't forget Uncle Joe's Bbq, and we're looking forward to trying Shela's Pot, a place we've passed by @ a million times, and maybe Crazy Cracker's.
Rhumb Lines is always a homerun, not to mention Quiet mon, Beach bar, Larry's Landing, etc...
So much to do, so little time!!!
(Uncle Joe's is a must, though...

Thanks everyone for all the restaurant ideas. I usually cook in alot, but will probably take advantage of the in-town opportunities this trip!
Minde- Would love to have drinks with new friends at Joes. I haven't tried their ribs yet. Though I do approve of Candies!
Has anyone done any Ditleff snorkeling lately? Wondering about access since the construction.
Can't recall who asked...but we are staying at Samuels Cottages. Will post some pics when we get back.

we are coral bay people too but started out as cruz bay'ers.
love, love, love to get a drink and/ or lunch at hightide. this is the closest restaurant to the ferry dock. awesome people watching, good blackened mahi sandwich.
then i bop around all the shops in the wharfside complex area- st john spice included!
cruz bay is alive and it's nice to wonder around with no plan and take in all the sights and sounds.

We far prefer the Cruz Bay area so stay on that side primarily. I'm surprised no one's yet mentioned some of our all-time favorite restaurants!
Ok, here's a perfect day for me on the Cruz Bay side;
Wake up slowly, make coffee, take it out on deck of where ever we're staying and watch Pillsbury Sound and the harbor wake up, while I feed the hungry sugar birds and hummingbirds who hover in line waiting for their daily fix.
We have our BIG discussion of the day: Which Beach do we go to Today??? Hmmm. If it's a calm day (we can easily tell if it's calm or windy/rough by looking out at the ocean--if there's any whitecaps, it's going to be windy. If it's calm, then it's Cinnamon--my all time favorite beach if it's not windy and I'm not getting sand-blasted.
If it's windy, then that's really a harder decision. If it's off-season and it's a 'no cruise ship' day, then we'll probably hit Trunk Bay. If there is even 1 cruise ship or it's on-season, then we'll hit Hawksnest, Gibney, Honeymoon, or Francis. We usually reserve Francis for a day when we will then go on into Coral Bay for lunch or dinner, otherwise it's too much traveling for us--remember, we are on VACATION! For us, that means taking it easy--except for the swimming and snorkeling!
Hawksnest--so nice and close as are Gibney, Trunk, & Honeymoon as well--are all special to us for different reasons. Our visits to Gibney largely depend on availability of parking.
Now after having a thoroughly delightful time at one of the above beaches, we wistfully pack up our beach things and head back to our villa for a quick dip in the pool, a nice shower, and then sit down with a nice glass of wine to discuss our 2nd biggest question

sorry for stopping right in the middle of my last post. my keyboard suddenly stopped working. so i'm resorting to this tedious on-screen one...yuk.
anyway. 2nd big ? is: where should we go for dinner?
we decide & call for reservations while sitting outside & watching the beautiful sunset quickly turn to dusk over the shimmering sea & islands & cays stretched out before us, as we toast the magic of the moment & each other.
La Tapa is Always at the top of our 'have to eat at' list. has consistently great food & good service. favorites are the duckconfit and homemade sorbets. oh yum.
next is waterfront bistro. favorites are the fois gras & the tuna nicoise.
lime inn for their fresh, sweet, grilled caribbean lobster or their all u can eat shrimp on W. nites.
ronnie's pizza for their 4-cheese, garlic, artichoke & sausage white pizza. they deliver on the cruz bay side...nice.
zozo's is vry good also. incredibly good fish. we often just get the yummy food 'to go,' when the 'beach & Sun' inertia set in.
rhumblines, plancha del mar, & candy's bbq, de livios, the fish taco stand, & tamarind inn round out the many choices.
if it's rainy, its easy to jump on the downtown ferry, shop for an hour or so in C.A., then take a return ferry home & still have plenty of time to do a lot of other things...

Gotta' agree with you there, STJ Lover-
I had the best strawberry margarita that I've ever had at the Lime Inn.- I almost forgot about it!
Didn't have the appetite for any grub, though; just killed some time while My Sweet Amy was getting a massage around the corner.
I've been bartending for @ 15 -20 beers,(
) and I've made a billion margaritas, but I'll not soon match the one I enjoyed there.

For a special dinner, make reservations at Zozos and sit at the bar at sunset. Attentive service, great food and amazing views. For a great beach close to town, try Hawksnest. It's easy to get to, easy to park, good snorkeling and classic North beach view. Cruz Bay isn't exactly the big city. You may not see goats in the street, but you won't see stop lights either.
Right on the money!mindehankins wrote:???meet some new friends for a drink and some Joe's ribs???
Love Quiet Mon, and then Uncle Joe's for some bbq on the way to Gecko Gazebo...all the makings for a groovy day.
Then maybe Rhumb Lines for dinner, yum!

Breakfast at JJ's or Tamarind.
Roaming around town and people watching
I LOVE LOVE sitting on the porch at Quiet Mon during happy hour and watching the world go by, it is just a great way to ease into the evening.
Gecko Gazebo around 3:00 with Tyler, he is just starting to get into his groove and let me tell you, it is entertaining.

A couple of years ago we stayed at Altamira. We walked down to the beach--and I have mentioned before that I liked to spy on the people at the beach with the telescope. But we didn't snorkel from there. It is close to ditleff point.Sun4MySoul wrote:Thanks everyone for all the restaurant ideas. Last year we went with Josh on Lion in Da Sun. We ended up at "that" beach that I spied on. There were starfish everywhere. It was amazing!!
I am trying to recall if that was ditleff--I think it was. If you locate Altamira look across to the private little beach.
If you follow the road to the end there is access to the beach (only assuming that you can't get there due to construction) by going to the gate/steps that will bring you down to the pebble/rock beach. I wore watershoes and walked into the water--could have swam to the white sand beach if I wanted to.
Also, I regretted not spending a lot more time at that beach in retrospect. Part of why I didn't is because it was right next to what was described as a "shark nursery" in one of the guidebooks.
To see the donkey's you are going to have to take a trip to the coral side.
We cooked in most of the time also. I like going for long walks--Trunk Beach.
Have a great trip. If you make it to my spy beach I would love to hear about it!
