Why I think Obama was awarded the prize

Post by Lex »

I usually don't come around here anymore, but every once in a while drop by. I'm usually quickly reminded why I don't come around here anymore. And now that JT has made his exit, I may hardly drop by at all. I've always enjoyed JT.

Since I am here, I wanted to post my thoughts on why Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. I fully supported him, contributed to his campaign and really delighted in his victory. But I was totally baffled why he would be awarded the prize. I became even more baffled when I learned that nominations had to be made almost within days of his election. I have great hopes for him, but he really hadn't done anything except get elected.

And then it dawned on me that he, in fact, had been awarded the prize for getting elected. And it gave me insight into the rest of the world that some folks found his being elected to be such a significant occurence that it merited the Nobel Peace prize. And I think it went way beyond a few Scandinavians meeting alone. I recall the considerable international interest and subsequent celebrations, but had apparently still underestimated the importance and significance of his victory to the global community. I also hadn't fully grasped the degree of concern with which the world had been viewing the U.S.

I think it was this: a lot of people in the rest of the world have grown increasingly uneasy with the U.S. and were truly frightened at what a McCain/Palin administration could result in. I don't think many folks would have been out in the streets across the world celebrating a McCain victory. I also think that as significant as the election of the first black president was in the U.S. , it had a different sort, but very profound significance for the rest of the world. The U.S. started to be seen in a different light after Obama's victory.

I was wondering what the president had done to deserve the prize. In some countries in this world, his very election to the presidency was seen as so monumentous in advancing the cause of peace that people felt that he, and his country, should be honored.

Lex, maybe you missed this...http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/f ... hp?t=13929

Or, maybe you think your opinions are that much superior to the rest of us on a given subject that they deserve their own thread?

Lex: I have no doubt that this prize is politically based.

If you are right and the prize is awarded strictly on the election of Obama then the prize should have gone to the citizens of America. Maybe then we could have gotten the money.

I didn't vote for him and I would not get any money.

Such is life.

Gee, Sox

Thanks for the thoughtful response to my thoughts. Great points. Here's a quote I enjoyed "I enjoy thoughtful discourse. "

Recognize it? It's yours. And I see that your response to my post is a sterling example of just that.

This award really is an excellent opportunity to gain a better understanding of how the U.S. is viewed in the world. I fully understand that many Americans--citizens and politicians alike--could care less about what the rest of the world thinks of us. And the world knows that. This award will be given to Obama, but I take it as an honor for the whole nation and he recognizes it as such.

Lex - my point was that there is a thread that already exists on the topic. Why move all discussion here when we have been discussing the same thing over there?

You have now broken a new barrier...We have gone from "hijacking" a thread, to "kidnapping" it. The InternetS will never be the same.

And BTW, I thought Obama's Olympic bid was supposed to serve as the shining example of how the "New America" is viewed in the world?

The world likes us when it is convenient for the world to like us. It's really as simple as that.

Until of course, Obama succeeds in "remaking America" into a second rate economy, "driven" by a socialist utopian society. Then, the world will love us.

But then...Who will be there to protect the world?

I think you are right Lex. I have said it before, and I will say it again. Even though I wasn't against Bush, I was glad that Obama became the president. USA needed to try a new way. And many people felt like me. It's not enough to be strong military and send more troops. In Northern Ireland they didn’t get peace before enemies began to talk with each other. And that’s what Obama tries. Don’t know if he will succeed, but I think it’s worth to try, and I admire his courage to do it.

Concerning the Olympic games I think you must have heard the true story about the election of Rio.
It had nothing to do with Obama or USA as a nation. It was a question about money. Many members from IOC wanted that USA should receive less money (return of a loan), but USA refused. And already before the meeting in Copenhagen a lot of IOC members have decided to punish USA and not vote for Chicago. The IOC committee from USA knew the plot, but haven’t told it to Obama.

Lex,
For what it's worth, I was very interested to read your thoughts on this matter.

Also for what it's worth, I believe that since this is the internet and people apparently feel free to do and say whatever they want in any manner they please, one can start one's own topic any old time one wants without anyone's permission.

Enjoy the peak foliage up there and thank you for dropping by.
Take care,
Ruth

I took both my kids with me when I voted, they will remember that day in history...I hope.

Their minds will not be burdened with the stereotypes that mine was in the 1960's...that is a great thing.

This country is great...I believe.

Here's a prime example of why many of us aren't coming to the forum as often...It makes me sad.

Folks...what did I say some months ago? Don't read it if you don't want to!

Now, if you also happen to enjoy train wreck theater...read away!
