Live swine flu report

I can't think of anyone on the forum who has said they have gotten this flu...are we the first?

My oldest daughter (the one with asthma) has it. Fever 103, lots of nasty coughing, body aches...but she is not miserable or laying in bed or anything.

Watching TV mostly.

She did get Tamiflu because of her asthma which may be helping.

Clearly the danger from this flu is the chance of secondary infection as the flu itself has been bad but not horrible. Hopefully she won't get one, but she gets pneumonia after lots of her respiratory infections.

We'll see how the rest of the family fares as I am sure someone will get it.

Anyways, flu is alive and well in NC.

After this will the remainder of the family get the vaccine? (assuming we don't get the flu) YES. I still think the the risk of complications is higher for the flu than the vaccine.

Just my opinion.

A very good friend in New Jersey reported last night that his high school age daughter was diagnosed yesterday; she is wearing a mask and staying at home.
We have heard of several cases in Gainesville (T. Tebow, of course)... much hand washing for me.
Hope your daughter and all your family sail through this quickly.

Oh DJMom, I am so sorry!! I will pray that she gets well soon and stays well. I hope your family doesn't get it!

Last week in my office a customer brought his wife. Normally she is not along. He told me she had to get out of the house because she has H1N1 and is getting stir crazy. I couldn't believe it!! I did not get it--either did anyone else who works in the yard. But still!

DJMOM, the customer (the husband) didn't get it either. Hopefully, that is a good sign for you!

When one person gets the flu in our house I go a little clean crazy--I clean everything once the fever is gone. I wash the sheets and disinfect the entire house top to bottom. We have very little re-infection so maybe it works?

Gina and lprof- thanks for your well wishes. Gina, can't believe someone did that!

That is what bugs me, there are all times when we accidently expose someone. For example my Girl Scout troop had an outing Friday evening and then after my that my daughter said she wasn't feeling well. I feel really bad about possibly exposing her friends-but we had no clue-and I let the parents know.

But to purposely do it is so wrong. Just because it is mild for one, doesn't mean it will be mild for the next.

Again, thanks for you kind messages-actually though now- I have to say she is doing fine-I would compare this to any other moderate viral thing. Could be better, but could be much worse and I am grateful for that.

yikes. hope all is well--flu and asthma under any circumstances are not to be trifled with (as you no doubt know) --hoping for a speedy recovery!

DJMom--My daughter, a sophomore at University of Iowa, had H1N1 a couple of weeks ago. She wanted to come home so she got a ride with a close friend and laid lifeless on our sofa for about 3 days, hacking and with a high fever. She is now completely back to normal --I was tailgating with her yesterday at the Iowa-Michigan game (awesome game, Hawks!)Anyway, I just hope your situation goes as smoothly. Our daughter had a number of friends at school who caught it and it has run its course with all of them. Good luck!

i don't know anyone (yet) who has been diagnosed with h1n1. each day i'm on the fence about being scared and thinking that this is too hyped up.

i have my bath & bodyworks antibacterial gel at my desk... just in case! but i always seem to be rubbing my eyes- doh! i gotta sit on my hands.

My 12 year old daughter was diagnosed with influenza A, likely H1N1, at the end of June. Her fever never went over 101oF and the Tamiflu seemed to knock it down fast. She went camping with us three days later with no discomfort. Not everyone gets intensely ill, she has more problems with allergies than the flu.

I would say I wouldn't worry too much. I was more nervous before she got it-I was especially worried because of the asthma. She is not out of the woods yet as she could get a secondary infection. But as far as the flu, it hasn't been bad.

As far as hype- I think it probably has been a little hyped up. But it is still going to be bad for some, so what you are doing is reasonable and it still makes sense to do what you can to avoid it.

ya know, neither my husband nor i have ever had a flu vaccine of any kind.

the older i get, the more nervous i am about having a reaction to any sort of vaccine.

We just had our son to the doc for his 4 year check up. Our doc said they have seen only two cases of swine flu so far and both were college students that came into the area to start school.

We have germ killing gel EVERYWHERE at work. Unfortunately, we have an employee battling lung cancer and several with premie babies so I am so worried about it passing around at work.
