QUICK! Moped or Jeep on STJ?

Post by spdrcr65 »

We are staying at the Gatehouse on STJ and the villa concierge is telling us to not rent mopeds, but to go Jeep instead. I don't know if they make something off of every rental and that is why he is telling me Jeep, or is a moped really not the way to go for the island?

Safety - not profit - is most likely the reason for the jeep recommendation... especially if first trip.
... have seen very few mopeds on the roads there.
Carrying coolers and beach chairs on a moped would not be easy.

Seriously....

If you are going to explore the island...I am not sure you would make some of the switchbacks on a moped...you need 4 wheel drive, especially if you get a bit of rain.

Jeep, dude.
Too many Jumbies.
Not too sure about those scooters...
As mentioned, those switchbacks can rock you!
Drive slow, and lefter...

I love to ride on two wheels but on St John go with a jeep. Too many hazards for a scooter like potholes, gravel, donkeys, goats, sheep, cement trucks taking up the whole road, totally blind switch backs on a 40 degree grade. Ya get the idea and there no cheaper than a jeep.

Definetly a Jeep. I have a moped here at home and I would NEVER think of renting one on the islands.

Once you get there you'll totally understand why we all advise you to rent a Jeep. The last hill from Truck Bay to the Gatehouse at Peter Bay will make it all clear to you. Have a wonderful time.

Really....he is only being concerned for your safety, not trying to make a profit!!!!! A moped is just not safe down there. Once you get there you will see what we all are talking about! Have a great time;)

It depends on whether you want to do a return trip! Or any other trips for that matter.
