An island that is today what stj was 15 years ago?
PA Girl's summing up of T&C is a good one.
We were glad we got to see a new island, and enjoyed the experience, but would not go back.
Other people love it, obviously. It seems great for people who like to stay at resorts, walk long beaches, and dine out every night. The water was truly beautiful. The people were welcoming and friendly. Friends visited last winter and loved it; they can hardly wait to go back.
We took a day trip to the very quiet, nearly desolate North Caicos as well.

One other thing about the T&C's. The coral reef that surrounds the island is fantastic for scuba diving. I will still rate it as the best one I have ever been on and I have been diving since 1988. The water as clear and blue as it get's anywhere and the beaches are nice.
That said, the interior of the island is ugly, flat, dry and I hate seeing poverty, especially when I am on vacation. It is very built up with huge hotels now.

We cheated on St. John and went to the north shore of Kauai. It's a great spot, but doesn't do for me what St. John does. Its just too big. Jamaica, and Tortola in a smaller way, are so spread out that you really need to be happy staying in a local ecology or plan on a good bit of driving. I've been very interested in St. Vincent and Dominica for the agricultural aspect along with beach time. I expect and SVG/Bequia trip will happen for us one day.
St. John has so much variety so close together that its my version of perfection. Virgin Gorda has some of the same things going for it.
Cheers, RickG

We had fantastic snorkelling off our first accomodations!John LMBZ06 wrote:One other thing about the T&C's. The coral reef that surrounds the island is fantastic for scuba diving. Concerning the poverty, I mentioned the same thing to our first landlords, who were 20+ year residents of the island. She said many of the shacks that I saw were occupied by tha large Hatian population that (at the time) were the labor force behind the building boom.
She said that they were paid a fair wage and chose to save their money, double and triple up in small homes and to send nearly all earnings home. Most most worked a few years before going home.
I don't know if this is true or not but it made me feel a bit less sad about the poor looking settlements.
Wow, there's not a whole lot out there about Isle des Saintes. I read French and had trouble even finding a ferry schedule from Guadelope. 1,500 people, less than 40 vehicles, 3 miles x 2 miles. Hmm, we've got a couple hundred Euros stashed and La Fête des Saintes is coming up. I've been meaning to get my girls to the French Caribbean.Exit Zero wrote:There is good food to be had almost everywhere - the French islands in particular .
Look into Isle de Saintes if you want a step back in time.
One reason that information is hard to come by is that there are a lot of alternate spelling. The French seem to prefer Îles des Saintes.

Hi
I have been on Roatan Island twice this year and have not had any problems or seen any problems. Stayed once for two weeks at Bananaramadive.com then a couple of months later at RoatanBeachFront.com
It sounds like you are listening to CNN (commonly called the Chavez New Network in Central and South America)If you want a local flar the go to http://www.roatan.ws
About listing Roatan:
If you are pro democracy yes to listing it.
If you are pro socialism then no don't list.
History will show Honduras as standing up to the world to keep its democray no matter how the world powers manipulated or were manipulated by Chavez and Manuel Zelaya.
Roatan is peaceful and waiting for the world to wake up...

I would add Roatan to the list, but with all the Political stuff going on in Honduras, this may not be the best time to go there.
I would suggest Virgin Gorda if you like an alternative to St John. Similar type of island, but less crowded.
Agree what everyone says about Turks and Caicos. A little hands up for Grand Turk, which was a charming little island, very little developed. Only reason I would go back though, is to scuba dive. Georgous beaches and water.
I would like to go to Bequia, but it's pretty hard to get there.
I'm going to Roatan in January and will let you know what I think when I come back.
