should we or not?

Post by samholtz »

what's everyone's opinion and experience with no car at Maho campgrounds for 4 nights?

should we save money and ditch the car for the beginning of our stay? or do you think we'll want it to go back to Cruz bay for dinners?

any feedback would be appreciated.

I think you'd feel pretty isolated at Maho without a car, and if you get tired of their food morning, noon and night, you'll probably want to head into Cruz Bay or Coral Bay for a change of pace. I'd get a car. :D

How do you feel about hitch-hiking?
We often pick up campers going to/ from town.

The first year on STJ we were at Maho Camps for a week. We used Hamilton Eugene's service during the day to go to different beaches. He had a lot of different day trips. We also signed up for his night trips, Island Blues, Miss Lucy's, even went along on a Maho workers night out! It was a fun way to travel the first time. Hamilton is a wealth of island knowledge and a good guy. I'd say you'd have fun without a car the first trip but thereafter just so many places to explore with a jeep.

I've been to STJ twice totalling 4 weeks and have rented a car for 1 of the 4 weeks. Definitely much better with a car for getting to the far reaches but then again I wasn't driving and would never drive that Island on my own. However, if you are happy with the beaches between Maho and Cruz Bay then you should have no problem hitching as a couple although Maho is rather out-of-the-way and not as much vehicular traffic as from Cinnamon so rides might not be that easy to come by. Regardless you've always got Frett's schedule as a backup.

You're there - you have an island to explore - get a Jeep!! So much fun exploring on your own and not have to rely on anyone's schedule but your own!!

If you want to enjoy the whole island and all that it has to offer, get a car.
