Connie, I don't think we'll ever get to the bottom of this. The original poster will not come forward and add anything else. I thought I was done, but recent postings (not yours) make me feel I have to reiterate. My S/O says stop, enough! The only thing that keeps me revisiting this unfortunate subject is that we are renting Adeste next summer. I have been posting with the owner for 3 months before this ever came up and my take is that she is a kind, caring person. I have received so many gracious e-mails from her and their 30 years on STJ, so much more than just what you are renting and when you are coming. Reading people for 55 years and going on my gut instinct lead me to believe that she is genuine and warm. If I am wrong, I'll find out next year, but my instinct about people and situations have served me well thus far.

I think a measure of Anthony's fairness and evenhandedness is demonstrated in his allowing a statement such as the above to remain.

As far as owner occupied villas, I believe that security is the greatest advantage. Having someone who has a vested interest in a piece of property and in their reputation watch over my stuff while I am gone is a plus in my book.

For Bandit and the other less educated people on what used to be a forum:

Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural forums also fo·ra \-ə\
Etymology: Latin; akin to Latin foris outside, fores door — more at door
Date: 15th century
1 a : the marketplace or public place of an ancient Roman city forming the center of judicial and public business b : a public meeting place for open discussion c : a medium (as a newspaper or online service) of open discussion or expression of ideas
2 : a judicial body or assembly : court
3 a : a public meeting or lecture involving audience discussion b : a program (as on radio or television) involving discussion of a problem usually by several authorities

And the readers digest condensed version for those of you without patience, the key wording is OPEN DISCUSSION.

What this has turned into is simply a fan club. If you don't rah rah you get poo poo'ed.

Sounds to me like someone is trying to make the "poo poo" hit the fan.

This is a pretty friendly place, though there sometimes are some rather spirited disagreements, and yes, sometimes it gets heated and personal. Over the several years that I have read and participated on this forum, I have only seen the administrator [Anthony] block a small handful of posts, and he has given folks a pretty fair amount of rope to voice their likes and dislikes.Yet, as another poster said a while back, it's Anthony's sand box, and as such, he can make the rules.

As to the referencing of Anthony's decision as "asinine" and the comment of "Bandit and the other less educated people," that was just inflammatory and came across as just looking to start a fight. Obviously this is not your idea of a what a forum, and open discussion is supposed to be. Whatever it is that you're looking for, this place isn't it. Again, I second what Bandit said: If you don't like it here...leave. Oh, yeah....Rah, Rah.

I think that there is someplace in the middle to agree to disagree. It is Anthony's forum and he can do what he likes with it. However, hosting a forum should bring with it a certain fairness in allowing posters to express ideas in an open way. Otherwise, it's not much of a "forum."

I don't agree with the thread lock as it seems to me to be fairly arbitary. Let's say I'm an owner of one of the many other not-so-stellar reviews of my villa on this site? Why do other bad reviews stand while this one is removed? It doesn't seem fair and smells a little like perhaps it is something personal.

That being said, the king is the king for a reason, and sometimes that means "not fair" as this isn't a democracy.

I don't think the review was removed because it was not a glowing review. I think that it was removed because it was not informative but just inflamatory.

In my mind, a review should talk about the good or bad in a way that informs people. The review that was posted did not provide any information, it pretty much said "Don't stay here."

If you don't agree with Anthony's decision, there are plenty of other places on the web for you to visit.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Oh, and the "If you don't like it, go somewhere else" statements are getting old. What you should really say is: "If you don't like it, keep it to yourself. Lalalalalalalalalalalalalalala"

Right?

I did not find the review informative, either. But I found it "hair-raising" rather than inflammatory:

The arguing ("I want *them* out of the house"?), the unlocking of the house, the suggestion by the owner to the renters to just leave (with a 4-letter word tucked in).

I think much remains unsaid. Perhaps the people should have picked up and gone to the Westin, as the owner offered. Sure, it's not what they wanted having paid for the privacy and space of a villa. But I know that when someone raises the big red flag (the way things were degrading) it's a sure sign that it's time to leave.

Guess we'll never know the aftermath.

Right?

Not in my mind, the people that complain are not usually members of this web community, but in many cases, posters that pop into controversy. I say go somewhere else. If you want to be a contributing member of a web board, then do it. Don't just lurke and complain. Go elsewhere in my book.

Well, that is your OPINION and you are totally entitled to it - as are the rest of us.

i stopped frequenting vinow because of lack of real stj info and too many negative and bickering posters. anthony has run a marvelous ship since i began posting and offers mostly stj info and an opportunity for friends and others with a common interest to share that interest. he's the captain of the ship (owner too i guess), let him pilot it.

my suggestion is let this be the last post on this thread.

Anyone on STJ Labor Day Weekend????

Post by greyhoundmom »

Papabou, I agree, let's end this one. We're booked at Adeste and can't wait to go next year. Anthony is an awesome moderator and I, as always, enjoy the heck out of this forum. So who are the lucky devils to be on island next weekend???? Life is good
