email on vaca--where do you stand?
1) Are you a check in with the work email everyday and deal with things as they come
2) Check every few days and deal
3) You're on vacation, screw email--I 'll deal with it when i get back.
I used to be a 3, but i fear i am morphing into a 1.........

< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
what is the use of going on vacation is you are just going to be a 1 or a 2 anyway.
the idea behind taking vacation is to be away from work.
if you bring work with you then you might as well have stayed in the office.
go on vacation! be selfish! love the ones around you and spend time with them!
when you get closer to the twilight of your life, are you going to happy that you worked while on vacation? no. you will be happy about the times you spent with the ones you loved.
whoa.

I'm between a 2 and a 3. I don't bring my laptop, but DH does so I just check in if I have to check the status of something in progress. I always set up an autoreply for my email and change the greeting on my voicemail so that, hopefully, no one will expect quick turn around.
Our CEO is great about this... he is big on protecting our personal lives and does not want to hear from us when we're on vacation. (He also lets me work primarily from home. I'm very grateful!)

If I am really on vacation I'm a 3 - if I'm just home with a day or two off I'm a 1.
My husband is a 1 and them some. Depending on the vacation I either A. don't really mind that much or B. threaten to throw all gizmos in to the nearest body of water!
I actually introduced Charlie to the concept of away messages at work. Before me he was never truly "away". I'm pretty sure he thanks me for it

I used to be a 1. I used to be beyond a 1. I once spent my entire drive to the airport on my cell phone with my office, and then whipped out my laptop when my plane connected in Vegas to write a speech and send it back to my boss.
And, you know what? It still wasn't enough, and I no longer work there for various reasons.
I used to be a major workaholic, but it was mostly because work was my life. Now I have lots better things to do. I don't take laptops on vacation. I don't check e-mail. I may do a few personal calls and texts (keep the forum updated via Margo), but I don't do anything work-related, and I do not get on the Internet AT ALL. On my recent trip to South Florida, I updated my facebook message on Thursday morning, just because I wanted everyone to be jealous that I was in the keys.
I totally disconnect on vacation. If I turn the TV on, it's just to watch mind candy. No news, nothing.
It's the only way to feel relaxed when I get back. And if work really couldn't make it a week without you, then they're not going to can you when you get back. LOL.
