Sept/Oct trip to New England need help
Hey all
I have a friend who is a newlywed and is taking a week and wants to explore New England.
They are going to Bar Harbor(sp) Maine and want to spend some time in Boston as well.
They will fly into Logan and drive to Maine.
I need some suggestions for places on the water to stay near Boston but not in it
Also suggestions for Maine and places to see on their way between Boston and Maine
Thanks
Rosi

On the way to Bar Harbor, here are some suggestions:
Portland area: Portland Headlight & Fort Williams, Old Port
Freeport: Shopping galore (LL Bean!)
Camden: Beautiful town right on the water, great little shops and a gorgeous harbor...I might be a little bias though since I live there!
Not sure how much time they're planning for stops or what they like to do, but these are a few choices.

roe, how off the track do they want to get and what are their interests? I would say to send them up towards wiscasset on rte one then maybe over the pemaquid/new harbor--if they have time get a boat trip out of port clyde or new harbor to monhegan island--or alternatvely (depending when they are going) out to see the puffins at eastern egg rock)
Camden is lovely and on the way is Cushing where Weth painted his famous painting cristinas world--and the farm is still there (maintained by the farnsworth museum if i remember correctly--if in camden a visit to owls head light is a nice trip--further on up Castine is a LOVELY little place--PM me if you wnat more suggestions--I am on my way up to the great state of Maine next week!

< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>
For beaches, Hampton Beach is very quite in the fall, but beautiful. Portsmouth, NH is a must stop, stay & explore!!! It's been on the top 10 places to live for about the last 10 yrs or so. Tons of fabulous restaurants, history, shops, waterfront!! A must do is: "Chauncey Creek" lobster pier in Kittery Point,ME visit:www.chanceycreek.com (they do close for the season on Columbus Day). Fall in New Engalnd is just like all the pics you have ever seen(but thought were fake)!!!!Just a few suggestions, have a great time.
In Mass heading North from Logan Airport about 40 miles is Newburyport ,a historic Seaport. It has a beautiful downtown, with a riverfront boardwalk, shops and restraunts. There is also Plum Island off the coast of Newburyport.Roughly half of it populated the other half is The Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. This is the first Island I fell in love with. It is very beautiful and birdwatchers come from all over country to go here. Newburyport is about a 6 hr drive from Bar Harbor.
I always liked the ride from Logan, North on 1A to Portsmouth/Kittery and then Route 1 North from there. We used to like to wave to George and Babs as we drove through Kennebunkport! Lots of beaches and picturesque New England scenery, as others have mentioned, along the way. There are also authentic New England seafood restaurants along the way too. I'm sure others more local can make better recommendations than I.
Of course I'm biased, but if they are here at the beginning to middle of October, the foliage in Vermont is beautiful!

The great thing about New England is that everything is within a couple hours drive and there are all kinds of cool things along the way.
(Disclaimer) I used to work for the local Chamber of Commerce....Hehehehehee!

Even though it has been some time since there...I give another second vote to Newburyport and Plum Island!2Linds wrote:In Mass heading North from Logan Airport about 40 miles is Newburyport ,a historic Seaport. I have to jump in here and say don't forget to make a stop in Ogunquit. Quaint, little seaside village and the weather here has been spectacular in Sept/Oct. Walk along Marginal Way (a paved walkway along the rocky coast) from Shore Rd to picturesque Perkins Cove. Great restaurants and shops and just a 'beautiful place by the sea' which is the Indian translation of 'Ogunquit' and only a little over an hour drive from Boston. Let me know if your friends have interest in stopping here. I'd be happy to make some recommendations as to where to stay, eat, etc.
It's like asking with one beach on St John should I visit.
My 2 cents
In Boston stay at one of the Waterfront hotels two days.
Driving north from Boston day three
Ogunquit and walk the Marginal Way and have lunch.
Drive to Portland spend the night and eat on waterfront
4th day drive Rt 1 north to Bar Harbor stopping at towns along way
Last day 6 hour drive back to boston to catch plane
