Next Time Do's & Don'ts

Post by flip-flop »

I was wondering if I am the only nut who thinks this far out about what she'll do next time - for the first time and repeats - and what she WILL not probably do again.

Things on the list for a future trip that after 6 visits I still have not done!!!

- Snorkel waterlemon
- Fish tacos at the Surly Cantina
- Brunch at Miss Lucy's
- More hiking (any easy hike recommendations?)
- Parasail - LMG&Ruth made that look just too fun and my husband would be SHOCKED if I planned that for us
- Little Lameshur (sp?) snorkel

Done before and will definitely DO AGAIN:

- Stay in Coral Bay
- Boat trip (most likely with Capt Brandi, I liked him when I met him ... looks like it would be fun!)
- Jost Daytrip - though this time I think I'd park myself at Soggy and not leave until I had to.
- Tourist Trap - Thanks Gromit for introducing us!
- Sweet Plantains! Curry night rocked, I would love to try other nights.

Off the list the next time around (probably)

- OVERPACKING - seriously seriously overpack EVERYtime, next time I am going to try harder not to!
- Dinner at Shipwreck (though I'll probably try lunch there since it gets raves from here and from people I've traveled with in the past)
- Stocking up at Starfish, Pine Peace for me from here on out for most of my shopping

Well, let me see! Things that I will do on my next trip:

1. Spend a day exploring STJ(have been before but not in a while)
2. Spend more time chatting it up with the locals. I can never learn enough from them;-)))
3. Relax at Cinnomon Bay for a few hours.
4. See more of the historical sights of STT
5. Sit on a chair at Foxy's and drink pain killer after pain killer(can never do that enough)
6. Eat conch fritters everyday! Love 'em
7. Eat at Betsy's in French Town and Tickles in Crown Bay....really love the food at both places.

Things I will not do on my next trip:

1. OVER pack. I say this everytime, but after last time I got a folder and made myself notes in it about this :?
2. Go to Tortola....been there done that too many times. Not worth it in my eyes.
3. Forget to put on suncreen EVERYDAY...not just after I have gotten the sunburn of my life 8)
4. Visit Cooper Island. We usually stay there for a few night every trip, but didn't enjoy it so much this past November.
5. Worry about what is going on at home!

If you like to scuba dive---check out 6 paq scuba with collete! She is the best. We have dove with her a few times and she is fantastic. Our son was only 10 years old the first time we went and she was absolutely wonderful with him. We loved her so much that when we came back down for my 40th birthday, she came to my dinner birthday party. Definately check her out!

Yes, for your next trip I suggest all clothes fit in a carry on only :) Ask LMG how to do it as I believe (OK know) she travels that way. I'm sure your villa will have a waher/dryer :)

Good point. I will try. Try being the operative word. But where will I fit all my hostess gifts?

I forgot to put on my to do list ...

That big a#$ buffet at Caneel that Vicki always hits. Looks worth the $$ to me ;-)

Flip, a VERY easy hike is up Peace Hill to see the ruins and the AMAZING views - have you done that? I highly recommend it.

Also, Miss Lucy's is a must do - great food, drinks, jazz and setting. It's a Sunday tradition for us.

Thanks Nancy. I'll definitely do the Peace Hill hike. Never done it, but think about it everytime I pass by.

And I regret not doing Miss Lucy's this trip for brunch but was outvoted by my tribe - Hubby and my mama. Especially since my mom was only getting 3 full beach days I felt too guilty to make her forgo the beach in the am for Miss Lucy's ... if I was smart I would have done Miss Lucy's brunch and then when the little guy napped my mama and I could have hit the beach on our own.

Next time!

Interesting little topic you have going here.

Over packing seems to be on everyone’s list of don’ts when they say they are going to plan it that way. I would think that for a majority of us it just doesn’t seem to work out that way. Oh well what can you do.

For the past trips that we have taken to St. John I don’t think there is anything I would change. We just go with the flow and whatever seems to pop up that day is what we do. No agendas, no worries, no regrets is the way we go.

I want to stay overnight on Jost, but the next trip's schedule isn't looking like it'll happen.

I plan to not buy so much that I have to check my roller bag on the way home.

I want to spend some more time on STT (but I say this everytime, and it's yet to happen)

I want to do the buffet at Caneel too. It looks yummy.

I can't think of anything I wouldn't do again. Everything has been great so far. Or at least there's been enough rum to not worry about it...

Next time we will:
-I HOPE that next trip, we'll see the sun!
-We'll plan on Miss Vie's for lunch every day except Monday (?). My husband doesn't get excited about food, and he just loved those conch fritters!
-Visit Trunk and Blue Cobblestone for the first times, and Salt Pond and Waterlemon again.
-I will wear a floatation device, since that poor woman drowned on Honeymoon. I didn't, last time.
-Not get excited about the steep roads. OK I won't.
-Meet Ruth and hopefully some more forum folks.

I'll keep my only won't to myself.

I guess I must have missed a trip report
somewhere about Caneel.

When do they have the buffet and what is the
cost? We are going over on july 29th for
a week and I would like to go!

Flipper, I'm sorry about your bad experience at Shipwreck, though I'm not totally shocked. Now to clarify: Shipwreck is one of my favorite places on the planet to spend an adult evening at the bar. That said, I have seen servers at Shipwreck, Skinny's, Blues, and Aqua Bistro have an unwarranted crappy attitude towards families with kids. It not the house, but the server. 'nuff said.

Since my next trip isn't yet on my radar I guess this is a safe exercise...

We've only been twice - for 7 and then 10 days, so there's obviously quite a bit we haven't done. And it's hard to find time to do too many new things since there are ones we've done on each trip (often multiple times) that we enjoy so much that we don't want to miss!

Anyhoo...

Haven't done yet, but plan to:

Trip to BVIs.
Dinghy day
Hike other than to Ram Head and Drunk Bay
Smoothie stand
Miss Lucy's
Sweet Plantais
La Tapa
Zozo's
Villa Gravity Day (too much to do on island!)

Must Repeats:

Waterlemon/Leinster
Beach Bar Forum Gathering
Brown Bay
Pelican Rock

Off the list:

Flat tire experience
Walk of Woe!

I think we need to move there!
Come see us!

I really enjoyed your trip reports; nice family and friends.

Something I did some years ago that helped me regarding overpacking for trips: as soon as I get home, I make a list of what I brought, and what I actually wore/used. I make the list right when the unworn stuff is still there in the suitcase!

I've now gotten to the point where I pack very lightly.
