Pay someone $8/hour to do security and you get what you pay for.

Come on...we've all flown recently. Ever see the people they have screening bags? I watched a group at EWR once more or less refuse to open bags filled with liquids and the TSA people just let them pass with a wink and a smile.

Throwing bodies at a problem does not solve it. throwing the right, well-trained bodies, on the other hand...

Well said Rob. As our duffel bag went through the scanner the agent was talking to a co-worker. Never even looked at the monitor..

Exactly, because if not we would have to come to grips with the fact that there is no real way to stop someone who is bent on harm from doing it. We will always be one step behind.

I spent 12 years working in places like the ones mentioned in the article. It used to be that you could not bring a calculator with any kind of memory into buildings and every bag was searched - the guards were military MPs. Now? bring that 32GB thumb drive, you iPhone and laptop in along with the bag of fertilizer and the rent-a-cop waives you on by.

A friend of ours runs the big private security contract for our county. They cut that budget in half and they pay is very low.

Solution? Higher taxes.

You're right Rick. I guess what amazed me the most is that they did it at The Office of Homeland Security, the people who are supposed to be protecting us. Just goes to show how vulnerable we truly are.

That is NUTS. My hubby consults for DOJ and the guys guarding there are all federal marshalls who do not screw around. It is insanity that that's not always the case!
