STJ Tales, what's your fave?
I need to get "Adrift". I've also read most of the books listed. Last read was "Down Island" by Bob Tis, it was terrific. I'm also partial to the Cap'n Fatty Goodlander books. I would love to read "Grandma Raised the Roof", she seemed like quite a character in the "People of St. John" book - bj where did you find it? The copy of the Guy Benjamin book I picked up was not only autographed, he wrote his phone number in it - only on St. John could you find that.
I met a woman (Grace Adams) through my local knitting group whose family lived on St John during the 1970's. Her husband was a park ranger there. They knew Ethel McCully well and even attended the wake that Ethel threw for herself on the grounds of Caneel Bay. Grace loaned me her copy of "Grandma Raised the Roof", which included letters from Ethel. She was a very interesting lady. I have been unable to locate another copy of the book to buy, so if anyone has luck finding it, please post it!
The also knew John Anderson, the author of "Night of the Silent Drums", which everyone should read. Their copy of that book also has many personal notations from the author. I was able to buy a paperback copy of it through Amazon.
Being able to hear Grace's stories about their lives on the island has added another layer to our experience on our trips to St. John. Their house was located at the top of the L'Esperance and was blown away in a hurricane years ago. We visited the site late May and saw that the foundation was still there.

jac w,
I found the book at the library. I do believe the book is out of print. You might want to check your local library for the publication.
Ethel Walbridge McCully
Grandma Raised the Roof
Non-Fiction
New York Crowell 1954
Ethel McCully was a mystery writer and has other books to her credit. Yes, she was one of St John's wonderful characters. I came to St John during the 1970's and had the good fortune to meet her.
