OK, Shelley, I have a question for you. I have looked at Satinwood before, and it looks amazing, but I just can't get past the whole "composting toilets" thing. Have you stayed there? What's that like? Because I just started recycling last year (I'm from Detroit; we like big cars and pollution), and I really am not an eco-chick at all, so I really want to make sure I can handle it.
Really, it sounds good though. I'm trying to reduce my footprint on the world, especially on St. John.

Hey...I writing this from the deck of bay house, in Coral bay and I will admit...I have been drinking! LOL...but....this house has 2 bedrooms and a pull out...has it's own pool....and is RIGHT above aqua bistro and lily's market. Matter of fact, I can hear some music being played in the courtyard from my deck and my husband just walked down to the market to get the kids some ice cream and us...more booze!
Not sure what they charge in the in season...but off season this place has been GREAT.....and it hasn't been rented in a while...so who knows!
enjoy!

Lulu-Yes, we've stayed at Satinwood (and with a teenage daughter!) twice and will stay there again. The following is detailed, so stop reading if you're not interested in composting toilets.
The two upstairs toilets are composting and ingenious. They are designed in a way that is completely clean and sanitary. There is a fan system so there is absolutely no smell. They are built high, so there is nothing to see. It takes about three seconds to adjust, and the idea that you're helping the environment is pretty great. The downstairs toilet is more like a boat toilet -- it uses little water.
The house was built and designed by Ken Damon, a man who loved St. John and wanted to preserve its natural beauty. They even moved the house back a few feet to save a "satinwood" tree which grows next to the main deck. The bananaquits and thrashers provide entertainment, as you're up in the branches. Beautiful.
The solar panel system provides the electricity and there is a back-up generator. One night we were at Skinny Legs -- our kids and a couple of friends were playing cards at Satinwood -- when the electricity went out. We looked up to the house to check on the kids, and Satinwood was shining -- the only light on the hill.
Ken passed away the year after we stayed there the first time. His house is a reflection of his vision. It is simple, spacious and comfortable. He loved the island, and it comes through with this house. It may not be for everyone, but the environmentally friendly design makes me love it.

Lulu, you might want to contact the owner of monkeynoclimb.com. The house is a new West Indian style home with two bedrooms (two king beds) and two baths. Spa but no pool. Its VERY PRIVATE, VERY HIGH UP on Bordeaux Mountain above Island Blues with big views. If that fifth person doesn't decide to go it would be a good fit and they could probably meet your price. Good Luck. You will find something you will be happy with.
