August vs July?

Post by greyhoundmom »

Is August appreciably hotter than July? We've been 2 weeks in July and thinking of 10 days in August. I know more places will be closed in August but can't think of any other differences.

The longer you wait to go to St. John in the summer, the better the chance of experiencing a hurricane or tropical depression. However, I prefer June - August because the beaches are virtually empty, parking in Cruz Bay is easier, the water is warmer and most things are cheaper. I would just buy "cancel for any reason" trip insurance and go when you want. I'm from TX where a typical summer day is 100+ degrees and humid, so I don't mind the heat. I also despise when I walk into the ocean and it takes my breathe away because it's so cold. Hawaii was like that. I've never been to St. John in the "in" season but I can imagine that the water is considerably colder.

Done both... fabulous either way... go for it... but get travelers insurance small price for the peace of mind.

It is hot - however the water is really warm and there are NO crowds anywhere - even today and it is only late June - I was the only boat on a mooring at Gibney beach. Trip Insurance --- YES --- but a great time to visit and explore - not as many places closed yet as you might think -- more Sept. closings than in Aug. -- less breeze - [barring a storm of course] and AC probably neeeded in most bedroom situations - maybe high up and South facing less likely as the wind is much more SE in the summer months. A fine time can be had --for sure!

We've gone in July for four of our five trips. The other time, we went in December and decided we liked July MUCH better...Warmer, calmer water was the key for us.

Our friends and family are always asking how we can stand to go in the summer due to the heat - I always say that it is hot, but it's not like Orlando in July hot...Totally different, IMO.
July 2003 - Honeymoon at The Westin
July 2004 - Glenmar, Gifft Hill
July 2005 - Arco Iris, Fish Bay
December 2007 - Dreamcatcher, GCB
July 2008 - Ellison Villa, VGE

Thanks for all of the replies! We are trip insurance people. After talking a lot over FD weekend, we'll probably end up at Orion's Hill again because we loved it so much last year. The breezes were spectacular in July. It won't be 2 weeks but 10 days is the next best thing!

July in STJ

Post by luv2go »

Have you posted a trip report about Orion's Hill? It is on our "short" list and we want to go in July. I'd love any info to narrow down our choices.

THANKS!

As has been posted, August is closer to hurricane season, but I have been in both months several times, and have not noticed a difference in temp. I just got home a few days ago from our June trip, and 103 in Houston makes STJ seem chilly.
