Drop-off and Pick-up at Ferry - Info from Car rental co.

Post by AquaGirl »

After reading the thread about people getting ticketed in the ferry area while dropping off and picking up people and luggage, I decided to write to the car rental company we are using (Bougainvillea Leasing - run by the Schnells) and ask for their recommendation. They responded with some helpful info and I thought I would share it here. We plan to go down the street from the immediate ferry area to stay away from congestion and problems. (The reference to the taxi spaces is because I told them last year that my husband pulled in to one of the taxi spaces for a few minutes to pick up me and luggage. One of the other taxi drivers got pretty upset and yelled at him.)
I hope this information is helpful to others.

Greetings,

People are not ticketed for stopping for few minutes to drop off luggage.

Tickets are issued for parking in or obstructing the handicapped parking space.

And as you have learned you should not pull into the taxi spaces.

The end of the dock are is approx. 4 car widths. You come down the road and start to pull past, indicate to the cars behind to stop and reverse up to the end of the dock and unload. Given any choice stay in the middle and don't use the far left which is the bus lane or the far right which is the crosswalk. If you have to choose, use the crosswalk. Provided you are not blocking the flow of traffic it is acceptable to stack in front of cars already backed in who are usually waiting to pick up guests.

Or when you are coming down the road with the park on your left and the taxi parking and beach on your right, there are two lanes going in the same direction. The left lane next to the park is the driving lane. The right lane is an acceptable place to double park briefly to unload. You want to be observant try not to block a taxi that is loading and has people sitting in it. Its best if one of you stays with the car at all times.

If you have minimal rolling luggage and its a crowded departure day, I would recommend pulling into the customs parking lot and unloading leaving one person to roll down the sidewalk of the park to the dock with the luggage.

A common error on pick up is to cross from the dock side to the park side and then having the pick up vehcile stop in the left lane to load. Do not do this. You may wish to cross over to the park side benchs and walk about halfway down the park toward the bandstand and wait on a bench with the luggage for your husband to return. He would then double park in the right lane to pick you up. There is an area of several telephone & power poles that used to have pay phones where taxis can't park and that is the best spot to double park.

Thank you

Some good tips there, thanks!

But I have to admit, all the stress associated with renting a car is making me reconsider. We might just do the taxi thing!

Thanks, that is helpful info. Nice to get the word from people who go through it every day. I'm thinking when we leave, we'll just drop off the car at the lot and roll our one bag down the street to the ferry. Then we can miss the ferry; not even there yet and already don't want to leave.

One clarification:
To get to the ferry dock, you TURN RIGHT AT CONNECTIONS and then take a left at the Post Office and approach the ferry dock from that direction.

DO NOT drive down the road in front of Connections and then zoom across to the ferry dock. Even though there is a Do Not Enter sign and a Left Turn Only sign there, I am amazed at how many people do this. This is a one-way street and if you do this, you are going the wrong way and cutting across oncoming traffic. It's illegal AND dangerous. Most of the tickets I witness are issued to drivers who do this.
