O'Connor's Car rental

Post by Lulu76 »

The lady we are renting our cottage from recommended O'Connor's car rental. I have never even heard of them before.

Has anyone worked with them? Where are they located? Any pros/cons/tips to renting from them?

My only concerns are two:

1. They are only open until 4:30 p.m. everyday, and we all know that it is hard to get from the Southeast to STJ by 4:30. I am hoping that they'd work with me since our cottage rental person recommended them, but you know I've had problems with this in the past.

2. They have a $75 excessive sand fee. As you know, we spent the last night of our trip last time trying to get all the sand out of our vehicle because the place we rented from had a "no sand in our vehicles, ever" policy. I guess I'd like to hear "real-life" opinions on that. We're not reckless with sand, but we spend most of our time in it, and it gets in our car.

Those are my questions. Can anyone help?

I've always rented from O'Connor because of their outpost at the Westin. THey do have an outpost in town - it moved though and is further away and smaller with no real parking. I forget exactly where they are - some where up the road towards the South Shore Rd.

Overall, they are ok. Not the friendliest bunch, but we haven't had any major problems....the last time we rented from them, we arrived at 3:30 and there was no one there to process the rental - apparently they left for the day. But after we called, they came back within 15 minutes. The girl wasn't too pleased, but that didn't affect my rental one way or another.

We actually were worried about the sand as we had a whole bunch of it in the car. We spent about 10 minutes cleaning it out, but there was still a considerable amount left. They inspected the car and didn't say anything about it. Afterwards (when we got our cc slip back), we asked them about the "sand threshold" and it basically seemed that it needed to FILLED with sand in order to incur that charge. If you are reasonably diligent, you should be fine.

I doubt they would stay open later, but they are fairly responsive, so go ahead and email them. My experience has only been with the Westin branch so the main operation may be more flexible.

Would I rent from them again....sure, maybe. I've heard such conflicting stories about the Suttons, St. John Car Rental and others that as long as my jeep has no problems, I'm fine with them.

The one benefit of O'Connor - they have a more varied selection of cars. We were down with our 2 yr old, so we got a Cherokee, which gave us more room (we had 5 of us)....most of other rental shops don't have the options they do - if that matters.

They did have a lot of choices, but I really want a Compass, so I may have to go with someone else. I just wanted to know more about them if people had opinions.

I do appreciate the feedback. I wasn't quite sure where they are because everyone keeps telling me "by the Texaco station," and it hasn't been there for years. I guess I will ask when I call.

I'm not too concerned with parking because we're staying close to town and I have no problem with giving my moolah to Slimman.

They are in the little office by the tennis courts at the Westin. I rented beach chairs from that office (they share space with the Westin tennis courts and rentals). Yes, they close at 4:30 or sooner if they feel like it. They also seem to run late getting there in the morning as I waited 20 minutes for them to show up past their open time. There is only one person at the desk and if someone is infront of you, have fun waiting.

I wanted to just buy beach chairs, but everyone was out of them in late May this year.
