Saving the life of four young birds

Post by linne »

As I have told in another topic we have knocked our Danish cottage down,

The night before the work should begin, we found out that a redstart had build a nest under the roof, and the parents were very busy feeding the young birds.

We were so sad, because we had to begin the work the next day, so what could we do?

Hubby got an idea!

Some years ago a couple of friends had given us a nesting box, a funny one, because it was with a door, and when you open the door you find a bottle with liquor and two glasses.

We have to try, if we could use that, so hubby removed a chain from the box and of course the bottle and the glasses. Then he climbed up the ladder with the box, took the nest very carefully and put it in.

<a href="http://picasaweb.google.dk/lh/photo/3Be ... site"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_4aSBK_jB-gs/SiTxm ... 3.JPG"></a>

After that he placed the box on the backside of the part of the cottage, which still should stand.

But unfortunately the parents could not find out what have happened. They flew around looking at the roof totally confused. What to do? Okay, hubby climbed up again, took the nesting box down and placed it in stead on the roof, where the nest had been.

What now! Oh, no the parents could still not find out what to do. They sat on the roof of the box, but couldn’t find out to go inside through the hole. Another try! Up the ladder again opening the door to the nesting box so the nest was to be seen. And this time they found out and could start the feeding again! Hurrah!

But then hubby had removed most of the roof, and now he had to remove the part, where the nesting box was. So again it was up the ladder, down again and up, so it could be placed on the same building as tried before, but on a new place easier to see and still with an open door.

We were looking for more than an hour, the parents couldn’t find it, so we were so sad, thought that all our efforts had been useless. But suddenly our son called us very happily – they have found the nest and were feeding the young birds again! The last step was to close the door and see if they could find out to come through the hole into the nest. And they could! We so much enjoyed to see the birds feeding the young birds, and it was so funny to see that they seem so proud of their new luxury nest with a perch to sit on.

I know it’s a little silly. What does 4 young birds mean in a world, where so many bad things happen. But I was very happy going to bed that night knowing that we have knocked a house down but we saved the life of 4 birds.

Thought I had to share the story!

Linne...I thought that was awesome that you and your husband took the time to save the birds. Many people would not have tried as hard.

Thanks for sharing your story....

Wow, I'm so happy to hear that you fixed it and saved the birds. We are also bird lovers. We even feed our small birds with sunflower seeds in the summer. They can use all the help they can get, when the have babies or chicks (or whatever it's called  in English).

Good job mr and mrs Linne!

This spring/early summer, we lived with a robin raising 4 babies right over our outside sitting area - bird poop all over everything - so I understand the compassion.

"our" babies recently flew the nest and Husband gave the mom her eviction notice. I think she is ignoring him.

I can see that you have the same question as I :D
what is "fugleunger" called in English? My dictionary said "young birds".

Nice to see that there are other birdlovers here, Thank you for your nice comments.

What a nice story! I'm glad the chicks made it. Yes, chick covers all baby birds. Some breeds have their own names, like eaglet, duckling, squab, but all baby birds can be called chicks, I believe :?
