Airfare stalking

Post by RickG »

It looks like the first week of August is the only chance to get to STJ with my girls this year. We considered spring break 2010 with the girls, but our reaction to that was "Moo!" - Too many people. Little Lameshure is not the Jersey shore and should never look that way.

My morning ritual is now to get up every day and curse at Kayak.com. From DC, the schedules stink and the airfares blow.

What is it with the Delta flight that arrives at 9PM from ATL? I'd love a 5:29PM departure out of DC for a Friday departure, but a long layover in ATL waiting for a 9PM arrival in STT? Stink.

Flights to SJU are looking better. It's starting to make sense to fly to San Juan and then do a charter to St. Thomas. There's even a red-eye from Houston to SJU. But, what the hell, George Bush International Airport? Is this some Kafka-esque joke? Did my browser fall into a 1984 in 2009 time warp? No, this is a message from God, do not take that flight - the trip could be completed via extraordinary rendition.

Still, if we are taking a charter from SJU why not just go to Anegada or Virgin Gorda? Good question.

The real solution is to cancel driving class, SAT prep course, college visits, financial aid boot camp, Girl Scout Camp, etc. and do a mid-week trip. These kids are clearly over-scheduled, and its interfering with my limin'.

Pale, bitter and stressed is no way to go through life.

At least December is still open for a no-kid trip.

Your suggestion is cromulent, but the reality is that the cheapest fare using Cape Air ends up at $551 rt and the routing is a comedy. Stinks. Blows.

Is NASA launching the space shuttle that week? I heard the fare on that thing is almost as high as Delta's.

rick,

if you can go mon to monday, delta's got a helleva deal from dulles via atl - $341.70 rt all inclusive. lv iad on dl 1697 @ 6:55am connect atl on # 677 arr stt at 2pm. I didn't get flt numbers on returns but 677 equip turns around and lv 1hr later normally & there should be numerous connects in atl back to iad.

the rt fare from dulles to stt is $26 cheaper than same flts atl to stt only! go figure, but still cheapest in a long time. also if you want to spend an extra hr of morning frolic in atl, fares the same for 5:55am out of dulles to atl!

We just booked Delta from Portland for first week in April for $519 with only 1 stop, from the PNW this was great.

We hestitated since I know this is spring break for some of the country, but we could get the villa we wanted at offseason prices so we will just have to put up with the crowds.

rick,

since i had to find your cheap ticket, how about a few lodging options too?

i know you've been eyeing peeble cove, she's open till 8/8 and marcy at cloud 9 is good on less than week rental if stay is at end of an open period. then find place for last 2 days. kids might like bolongo bay back on stt.

private homes offers 15% off on booking in last 30 days and with the low summer occupancy, probably get now. jim and i enjoyed nautilus on maria bluff early nov and viewtiful on mamey peak is on short list for next trip with bride due to proximity to maho/francis.

you do the rest.

my bad rick. i went to check returns and the 341 fare requires a return on the 8am flt out of stt. so to get that fare you'd probably need to stay on stt on night before return home.

forgive me?

Rck, not sure of when in august you are looking--but if you are fleixble, usair has a flight out of dulles 9 am with a stop you get in to STT at 3:25 (leaving on tuesday the 19th of aug)
return the following tuesday flight leaves at 4:40 and gets into Dulles at 11:36--
that may be too late for your girls (not sure when school starts for you guys)
but i am sure that earlier in august there is something similar
the fare was 329
via kayak
another kayak tip--check at different points in the day--while i am not sure this is true for all routes (esp popular ones) i found significant shifts in airfare during the day for certain routes.
< leaving on the 22nd of march...but too lame to figure out the ticker thing again!>

Rick - No help from me on your flights, but I help my kiddos grow up to be as wise as your girls and desire to avoid the "moooooooo" crowd.

Feel your frustration. I tried to plan a four or five night July trip but we just couldn't get there at a reasonable time. Getting to STT in the evening just wasn't cutting it for me.

If you do go the VG route, we used Island Birds between SJU and VG and loved it! Vacation started as soon as we checked in with Island Birds, it was great.

Thanks gang. Papabou, you know I want Pebble Cove! My lover wants to be closer to Cruz Bay, but, well, he who writes the check...

Friday 7/31 is the earliest we can travel and need to be back by 8/9. Working on it!

Hey Rick

I just played on Orbitz with flex dates and found $370 (inc tax) roundtrip on Spirit - Sun 2nd to Sun 9th - arrive STT at 3:30pm and returning at 4:30pm out of DC (I think that's where you fly out of - forgive me if I am waaay off base with the airport :) )

Also on Delta you can take the flight that arrives into STT at 2pm and departs at 4:20pm - same dates and that fare is $401.00 (inc tax) :) :) :)

Check it out
