Wild Jasmine

Post by IRBO-STJ »

Has anyone stayed at this villa? Any likes, dislikes etc.Is it really that far out on the East End?
This villa seems to have everything we are looking for. We've never rented from this villa company before so I guess I'm a little nervous.
Also, thinking about Palm Villa (gift hill) or Hale Lani.
If anyone can give any information or advice on any of these villas I would be very grateful.
Thanks,
Amy

Wild Jasmine is just about as far east you can be and still be on St. John. I think their Web site is being very, very generous to call it a 20-minute drive from Cruz Bay. It's AT LEAST 10 minutes to get there from Skinny Legs. It's really far out. (It's next door to Sloop Jones', if that helps.)

We were supposed to stay there last year, but when we had a few people cancel, it got too expensive. When we saw where it was, we were glad that we ended in up in Chocolate Hole again. Although if you want privacy and plan to just lime at the villa, it's not a bad place. If you like nightlife but don't want a long commute back to the east end in the dark, it's not going to be fun.

The company seemed pretty good to work with and they were nice enough. It was my understanding that Barbara and Terry (Sloop Jones) are there to help you out since the owners are in Massachusetts.

Having said all that, I do want to say that I have stayed in Hale Lani and Destination St. John is super great to work with. It's a great house and a good location. Not far out, and a little noisier and busier, but very convenient.

From Sloops to Cruz Bay (depending on whether you are taking Centerline or Northshore road) would be a SOLID half hour drive on curvy roads pushing 45 mins if you take the Northshore rd. and if there is a water truck or cement truck in your way it will take a heck of a lot longer.

It'll take you 10-15 mins to get to Skinnys from the "end of the road" as Sloop calls it if you are driving the speed limit. I drive like local when I'm there so it takes me less time, but it really will take you longer than they say.

It's not a bad place to be but I'd prefer it if some of the Villa Co's were a bit more straighforward about the time it takes to travel on island.

While the island isn't large, there are steep hills, sharp turns and switchbacks etc that makes driving even 30 MPH a little too fast.

This side of the island is great especially if you want some serious peace and quiet, but just be aware of how long it may take you to get places.

OK, I live here and drive almost like a "local" (in between a tourist and a 30 year "local" :)) and it would take me probably 40-45 mins to get to Sloop Jones from Cruz Bay.

I swear my MIL almost had a heart attack in the car with me.

Honestly I wasn't going that fast but I swear I've memorized the curves on the Northshore road at this point so I can almost drive it with my eyes closed so I'm pretty casual about my driving on island.

Since she was seeing the curves for the first time she assumed I was too!

She stopped riding with me after that... bonus!! ALL part of the master plan! tee hee

Thanks that just what I wanted to know. You guys are the best!!!
I had a feeling it was way out there and I'm not sure I would like to drive all that way.(I'm usually the driver because everyone else chickens out)
Back to the villa search again urghhh.
Usually I already have the villa picked out and booked by now but because of the economy everyone was nervous and just decided now that we can't let it ruin our fun.

Thanks again,
Amy
