Need Help with my Freudian Slip

Post by hotrns »

Ok … I am an idiot but somehow I believe this can still work. When I made our arrangements for our upcoming trip to St John, I made everything for the 1st through the 11th (Villa & airline tickets). This would give my family a week and a half on the Island and, as I let on earlier, I have been spinning up everyone getting them ready. Last night my son called and asked why the airline reservations that I made two months ago are for a return on the 13th. At first I thought he was kidding (he has a perverted sense of humor sometimes and I don’t know where he gets it). Unfortunately after checking the airline confirmation I realized the little turkey was correct. After I gave him hell for not letting me know months ago when I first sent the confirmations out, I got on the horn to the airlines. That was when US Air informed me it would be $150 per ticket to change and in addition, the fair had increased by $180. That would mean an increase of $330 per person or $1650 for the five tickets!! My math skills immediately clicked in and I realized that two days on the island would actually be less expensive than changing the tickets. Of course I first had to convince everyone that two more days in paradise might be endurable (I tried to pass it off as the plan all along, but nobody bought that). After everyone stopped celebrating the senility of their dear old dad, my next task was to find a place to spend those two nights. Our Villa is available the next week, but they do not want to extend us by two days since that would make it un-rentable for the rest of the week. The management company stated that if the Villa was not rented by June 19th we could extend it. I am concerned that although not having to move would be convenient; we might be in trouble waiting that long. What is the chance of us finding a place for five people for two nights (July 11th & 12th)? Other than a tent or a blanket on the beach, what are our options? Thanks for all your help.

I would contact one of the many villa rental agencies and see if they have a villa available for those two days. When I review the availability calendars of the villas, I see many two to three day openings in the calendars.

Don's idea is great. As an example, I checked the Destination St John website for Palm Terrace Villas. Unit #5 (3 bedroom) is open July 11,12,13,14,&15. I've stayed at Palm Terrace, and they are lovey, LARGE, modern, condos. The view is not the best, but for the price they are a bargain and walking distance to Cruz Bay. If something like that interests you, I'd make an offer for the 2 nights you need. But, I bet you could wait until June 19 (I think that was the date you gave) and see if the villa you are already in is still open. I don't think I'd want to move for 2 days if I didn't have to.

Good for you......you get an extra 2 days. :D

Im surprised they aren't going for it. I would tend to try to look on the VRBO sites and see if you can contact the owner.

I don't think waiting till the 19th is a problem though. Something will be available...

I have no advice, but I think you are a genius. I'll have to try this next time! Oops. I booked a 3 week trip ... I thought I booked 1 week. My bad.

You could also try the St. John Inn.

Wow two extra days .... that's great news for you!

If you are in a jam try Cruz Views, they might have an openning or look at the Caribbean Villas site at the last minute travel. They have great deals.

Have a great trip!

I would wait until the 19th :)

In this economy I'm surprised they are making you wait. There aren't very many villas on STJ that have requirements like that. If they are letting you rent for a week plus 3 days, why is a week plus 5 days a problem?

I think the problem is that they (by coincidence) have a full week available after we leave and they are trying to rent it out for that week. If we took, two days they would be unable to rent the 5 days of the rest of the week. By the way, when I first made the reservations (3 months ago), I could have had it for these two days with no problem.

I would try Estate Lindholm too, but I think Lauren said they are doing minimum 3 night stays now.

Check Inn at Tamarind Court as well and Hilcrest Guest House (both on STJ).

If not, you can always stay somewhere on STT as an option.

Good luck.
