carryon math

Just trying to do the math here for luggage since it is our fist visit that we have to pay for bags...

I am thinking about having the kids use their little roll on suitcases for carryon. But I am trying to figure out-is this going to result in extra ferry bag charges....can they roll on a small suitcase on the ferry or will it have to be checked at the dock.

And if so, how much is a bag to be checked..if we have to check these at the ferry...by the time we check 4 small carryons (and tip taxi for extra bags) maybe we are better off just bringing and checking one or two big suitcases after all.

We have to check some stuff (snorkel gear, etc...) anyways. If I am going to save $50-75, it is one thing, but if I am having to add extra tipping for bags plus ferry bag charge, maybe it isn't worth it. Unless you can roll the bags on the ferry yourself.

I should know this but we have never gone via ferry. We have been spoiled. Not anymore.

I am pretty sure that if the kids can wheel/carry their bags on their own, and they are not larger than a normal (small) carry-on, the ferry folks won't count them as "bags." But if you want the ferry people to take them with the rest of the luggage, you'll certainly have to pay.

so when the "carry on" people go on the ferry, you guys are not checking those (small roll-on suitcases)-and the ferry people are ok with that...

assuming that the bags are small and manageable?

I have never seen the ferry people let anyone keep a roller bag, but maybe it'd be different with kid sizes. And someone else might have a different answer. I just know I try to keep mine because I'm afraid it's going to fall in the ocean, and they always take it from me.

hmmm...they don't have Elmo suitcases anymore...that is too bad...they could start crying if the guys take away their Elmos.

then again I don't think that would be too convincing coming out of an 8 and 11 year old.

My experience is that the roll-ons are treated as luggage and you have to pay for each one. I can't remember how much, but they won't let you keep them.

We kept our rolling duffel with us too. Crash shot the ferry guy a "hairy eyeball" and he didn't give him an argument. Tell them your meds are in it or something..

We've always been able to hold on to our carry-ons if we wanted to but not the checked size bags. Of course, I usually have my arms full of baby I don't even keep that.
