sandwiches?

Post by djmom »

We are staying in Coral Bay for the first time. For the last several trips, we have pretty much started out our days by driving by the Deli Grotto to get sandwiches for the cooler.

Well that isn't going to work out too well from Coral Bay.

What deli(s) or other places would you suggest for a "lunch to go"? We have only been to the Big Belly Deli. It was fine, but it wasn't Deli Grotto.

We don't need frou-frou gourmet but I would like some options other than meat and cheese. Any suggestions appreciated...or I am going to be packing lots of PB and J and I'm not real excited about that.

DJMom-- I hear you on this one. We used to do the same thing but now we are Coral Bay people when it comes to renting villas.

Here's what we do:

We eat REALLY hearty breakfast. Something involving eggs and bread and some sort of bacon related product.

Then we pack some heavy duty snacks: Pringles, fig newtons, pretzels, granola bars, water etc.

Then we head to the beach early in the AM and stay until we either get too hot or too pruny.

At this point it's usually around 2pm (after the lunch rush). We pack up our stuff put some clothes on and we head to either Skinny Legs, Island Blues, Vies or the Tourist Trap for a late-ish lunch.

After a relaxing lunch we just head back to the villa for afternoon pool time and then we shower and get cleaned up for dinner.

SO I guess this is a round about way of saying that we find our routine doesn't require bringing lunch with us anymore and usually includes an excuse to hit one of our favorite haunts.

Besides, if you brought a sandwich the mongoosedem would just get it anyway!!

Just another approach 8)

That just might work Gromit. Especially because we like to cook at the villa most nights.

Big Belly Deli is the place to go in Coral Bay for sandwiches for the beach. It's across from Lily's Gourmet Market in Cocolobo Plaza.

Yes, it was OK-my husband didn't have a problem finding something to order, but I kind of like a sandwich with some veggies on it. Not all meat and cheese.

I don't really have a complaint with Big Belly Delly, because it was fine for what it was- a deli.

I want a sandwich place. Without a picture of a guy with a big huge gut reminding me of how much I am eating!

I guess I do want a little bit of frou-frou in my sandwich. Or I want it to be different in some way or I want to be eating it in a fun place.

OOOPS! I wasn't reading carefully enough. I'd better start slowing down and make an effort to get on 'island time'.

We stayed in Coral Bay last trip and actually still drove to Deli Grotto in the morning several times for sandwiches or treats. We didn't mind starting our day out that way and while Big Belly is fine, like you said, it wasn't Grotto. We also love Baked in the Sun and will have to find a way to fit them in this trip too.

We like to do a similar thing - hearty breakfast, snacks on the beach, late lunch (actually our main meal for the day) usually ending up at Shipwreck, then lite snacks in the evening. But some days we want to stay on the beach every minute, at least until the no-see-ums or skeeters chase us away around 4-5pm. So we bought all the fixings for sandwiches at Starfish. They had some nice whole grain bread, lettuce, tomatoes, mustard, cheese spreads, hummus, pickles, etc. The sandwiches aren't as frou-frou as the ones from the deli but they were a pretty good beach picnic. We tried several types of lunchmeat from the Starfish deli. Turkey was just ok, but the pastrami was good. On one trip we bought a cooked chicken and ate chicken sandwiches for a couple days. We usually make them the night before so we can make a 'quick get-away' (not really that quick since I am not a morning person) to the beach. We also tried a few pre-made marinated salads from the Starfish deli and they were good.

We noticed that Lily's had many (a dozen, maybe?) types of hummus, plus different kinds of cheese. They bake bread there too. So one day, we bought hummus, bread and fruit for a light lunch.

Similar sentiments here about Deli Grotto: we found ourselves returning to them again and again last trip. Great sandwiches!

Hey B&J

I have never heard that Lily's bake bread on site or had the pleasure of smelling fresh baked bread in Coral Bay, I would have thought that would be the talk of Coral Bay locals if so :) not to question but are you sure (I guess I am questioning huh  )

I can also report that Lilly's Deli meats are really good if you are going to make your own sandwiches.

They also stock REAL bagels imported from NYC in the freezer section. Best I have had outside of my fave spot on Washington Square park next to NYU!!
