swim and swim and swim

Post by chazalez »

One of our group members is an avid swimmer (think triathlon). Catch is... a couple of years ago when he was in his mid 30's he suffered a stroke which has left him legally blind. He would love to swim and swim and swim with a kayak following so he won't get lost. Where is the best beach for this to happen? I really don't want him to bump into any rocks or coral ; )

Thank you,
Chazalez

Most of the swimmers on St John swim Maho and swim buoy to buoy - it's a good safe swim :)

He could follow the route of the annual beach-to-beach power swim (happened last weekend, I think). Maho Bay to Cinnamon Bay to Trunk Bay. I think the race actually continues on to Hawksnest, but that bay has a shallow reef, so I would have him stop at Trunk. You can rent kayaks at Little Maho and Cinnamon beaches.

Cinnamon Bay does have a shallow section, so it would be safest for him to go behind the cay when he gets to that part of the bay.

Francis Bay is another beach that might be a good choice. It's wide and there's no reef or rocks in the middle of the bay, just turtle grass.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

That sounds fun, Liamsaunt! He will have an entourage of kayaks.

I agree with Liamsaunt - he could do the Beach to Beach route and it's approx 4 miles.
Maho (my first idea) is great but it's not far approx 1/4 mile per length so he would have to do alot of back and forth but you could sit on the beach and watch :) and it is free of any obstacles.
