If only they knew how much theyed miss you if you or your hubby wasn't around. My boys found out the hard way now I'm sure Laurie is looking down seeing what fine men they have turned out ot be. In fact my 23 year old told his girlfriend the other day that he was going fishing with me she got p%ssed off he told her if he couldn't spend time with his dad it wasn't going to work between them. But when he came home with acouple of meals of fish that he cooked for her all was forgiven.LOL

My daughter went to NYC for spring break this year. When she got home she showed us the pictures. She had walked across the Brooklyn Bridge with her friends. I pointed that just 3 years ago when we took a family trip to NYC she refused to walk the "WHOLE BRIDGE" because it will take "FOREVER!" I asked if the bridge was shortened. She grinned and said, "I guess I was just young and dumb and didn't want to do anything with my parents."

I think boys are so much easier to raise than girls. My son is our oldest and he's such a sweet heart. He would never give us all this attitude.

Tom, you've done a great job raising your boys on your own. I'm sure Laurie is very proud of you all.

I agree with you Cypressgirl. I think that boys are easier. Have never had troubles as described with our son.

But it’s still touching to read how nice Tom’s sons treat their father.

Went to NYC last May and stayed with my cousin that lives one block from Times Square on 48th. Amazing location actually, especially since we could avoid all the hotel crap and crowds. Only advice I can say is go to the top of the Rockefeller building instead of the Empire state. The Rock gives you a scheduled time window for your tour. You still have a wait a bit, but 30 minutes or so instead of 2-3 hours at the Empire state. You also get a good view of the Park from the Rock too.

Also, spend some time in Central Park. It really is amazing that is in the middle of the city and the shear size of it....not to mention all the areas within the park. Wished we would have spent more time there.

And as a by product of reading this thread I have gotten my daily dose of birth control

Hey cypressgirl....I'm late to the party as usual but have a few suggestions if you still haven't booked. We've stayed at the Palace post Thanksgiving weekend when town is pretty slow. The benefit is that hotels have good pre-holiday deals and town is pretty much decorated for Christmas. All the store windows are ready but the Rockafeller tree is just there...not lit yet. Oh well, small price to pay for the deep discount. It is really tough to get into a premier hotel Christmas week.

If money were no object I think I'd go for the St Regis 55th and 5th just to spend as much time as I could in the King Cole Bar with one of my favorite Maxfield Parrish murals adorning the wall behind the bar. I must have lived in that era in another life...I just love it there.

But since money is an object the next best spot we've found is The Lombardy http://www.lombardyhotel.com/ on East 56th a short walk from fabulous. It's a beautiful old Deco mansion that Hearst built for his silent fim star mistress. Years laster it was converted to apartments and glitteratti like Taylor and Burton used to hang there incognito when they were cheating on there SOs. Despite that rather scandalous karma the building is fantastic and if you poke around you can see the old ballroom that hasn't yet been fully restored yet. It's been a bit of a Manhattan secret but the secret is out and prices are climbing but haven't yet hit the Ritz roof just yet. Ask for a rennovated apartment and you'll get a suite with a cool deco kitchen. You'll feel like you are in another era....very cool.

On the show side if I could only see one it would be hard to choose between the Phantom of the Opera and Wicked...both terrific shows. If you are going with tweens or younger Wicked would be my recommendation. If over then Phantom. If you choose Phantom I think the floor is better than the Mezannine. The Mez is better for Wicked just because of the effects and the theater.

For dinner after the theater hands down favorite in my family and reasonable, short walk from the shows is Marseille http://www.marseillenyc.com/
lively, great looking, fantastics cocktails, lick the plate delicious, great service and very reasonable. Make a reservation because it is very popular. I'll try to think of more later...gotta run. Happy planning.

Oh duh....I just saw the post about spring break. Still a great time to go.

IMO the knock off bags get better the closer you get to uptown. They are my favorite thing to shop for!

Not suprised at all to hear that Waterguy's boys are super guys. The apple and the tree thing...

I just came across this "How to look like a New Yorker":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAS3Tcli53U&NR=1

It's mostly pretty silly but I liked the mention of the Vendy awards for best street food vendors. I didn't know about the Vendys, but I do like getting lunch from the carts.

Thanks for all the great advice. We are now thinking Spring Break or next summer. We've seen Wicked here in Houston, and my daughter is going to Phantom with her boyfriend for their 6th month anniversary next month. Still not sure where to stay, but I know we're going to love NY. I so appreciate all the good advice.

Thanks Loria, we decided, for several reasons, that Christmas would not be the best time for us. We'll either go Spring Break or early summer, if the economy allows us to have 2 in college and still go to NYC and do all the things we'd love to do. Actually, my youngest will be a senior, and her college choice will determine when we'll be able to go to NY. I'd still love all the good tips I can get.

Thanks, Deb
