Waterproof case for a Canon PowerShot SD600 digital elph

Post by sea-nile »

Has anyone used this waterproof case for this camera?
I am thinking of buying one for my camera.
I really don't want to buy a new waterproof camera when we have so many cameras already.

I have the SD400 (the one right below the SD600 - it just has a smaller viewing screen) and the underwater housing for it. I have used it the last several trips we have taken, and it is well worth the money.

I got the housing because I didn't want to carry more than one camera on vacation, and it helps, kind of. The housing is as big and bulky as another camera, but it sure is nice once you get there, just plop your camera in the housing and off you go.....sight seeing, or snorkeling. You'll like the housing.

By the way, which SD Canon do you have?

I have the SD600 and I love it! It is so small so I figured with the case it would still be small.

We plan to get the waterproof housing for my SD300 before our trip. Mostly for taking underwater pics, but also for the peace of mind when we have the camera at the beach and around the pool!

Hi

I am not familiar with your camera model, but I can vouch for the quality of the Canon waterproof housings. We have the Canon Powershot A630 and the case for it. It is very well made and almost all of the features are accessible. That said, the small viewfinder is blocked by the construction, but you wouldn't be able to get your face close enough to see through it anyway with a dive mask on.

The other drawback I have found is that it is so bright snorkeling, that we cannot see the LCD screen. We have to point and shoot. We just came back this past Sunday from Tortola and most of the shots we took with the system yielded some fish! Woo Hoo.

The underwater housing requires almost no maintainance as well. Pay attention to the manual's recommendations, though.

JMQ wrote on this topic and his suggestions were right on.

Sea-Nile - the SD600 is a great little camera, and the housing is not that much bigger, so the camera and housing are still compact.

There are a couple of suggestions I have, from experience, the battery gets kind of warm and it sets up a humidity inside the housing after a while. If you get a couple of those silicone bags for drying and plop them in the housing when it's not in use, it will take care of that problem. The problem, specifically, is, humidity causes condensation on the inside of the housing.

Just be sure the O ring is clean and lubed, and the lens cover is clear, and you will get great results underwater and on land as well.

Glad to hear that Jim. Hope you tried the video function underwater like I only wish I had. I didnt think the low quality would be worth it but have since seen others that look pretty neat.
Hope you and Sue had a good trip and will be posting trip report (or at least some comments comparing your BVI experiences to STJ)and/or a link to your Tortola pics soon.

We got the underwater case for our Canon Power Shot SD 300 and we've been satisfied with it. No leaks, and the pictures turn out pretty good (of course not as clear as pictures taken above water).

My only tip would be to put the case on BEFORE you hit the beach. Maybe it's common sense, but I remember the frustration of trying to get every last grain of sand out of the case on our last beach trip!

I think someone wrote,(JMQ again, perhaps, that putting the camera in the case in your room (usually AC on and low humidity) helps. I was able to put a dessicant stick (Mosture Munchers) in the WP case with the camera. I think this helps too. To prevent it from getting too warm in your car enroute, cover it with a towel until you get to a shady spot under those wonderful sea grape trees along the beach.

We will be waiting for your trip report and the pictues too!
Jim

PS: to JMQ- I will have to get the pics ready so that Sue can get some into her reports when she gets time to write it. I, too am anxious to see it written and posted. Great 3 days!

Where and how much? I cannot locate one in the store. On-line they seem pretty expensive.

I have the 600 and would LOVE an underwater housing for it. But I'm an el cheapo and won't splurge. I know it seems pretty silly, when you think of how much we invest in the vacations and those vacations generally revolve around the snorkeling. Hey, maybe I can talk myself into spending the cash.

I have the 600 also and just got a bag for it at Academy. Hubby went shopping and came home with it. I haven't tried it in water yet but the bag is really thick plastic and has a great closure. I agree with the silica gel need though. The pics I took inside the house in the bag came out great! It is easy to get to everything because the bag is a little bigger than the camera so it is loose in it but I am paranoid that it will get scratched. I will let you know but we aren't going till the summer.

When I got my underwater case, I saw that Canon sold them on their website for about $150, but we got the same one from amazon.com for $109 I think. It pays to shop around!
