Need central-ish US location
I thought maybe those of you that are well US traveled could help
We are looking for a "somewhat" central location, preferably on the water; lake or ocean, easily accessible by a major airport with large rental houses.
We know the coast will not be central but if we can get good deals into a major airport, it might be worth it. We were thinking Outer Banks but are worried about accessibility.
This will be for a large group of woman getting together that is coming from all over. Any suggestions?

I find the Outer Banks to be sort of a pain in the you know what to get to.
What about Hilton Head? I hear of good airfare deals from the from northeast.
I really like Isle of Palms and SC barrier islands. It wouldn't be a bad drive from Charleston but I don't know how well that airport is serviced by major carriers.

You are correct about accessibility of Outer Banks-big problem.
For your group I would second the Isle of Palms, you would also be able to go into Charleston for a shopping or for a night-FUN!
I also am a huge fan of Bald Head Island near Wilmington NC.

Hi there!
We're about an hour/90 minutes away from the Outerbanks (OBX)and visit often. The closest airport is Norfolk International which would be around 2 hours away...I have to disagree with the others...I don't find it hard to get to Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills Or Nags Head. TOTALLY easy drive and absolutely worth it. Lots of GREAT homes to choose from. With some great places to eat. If you would like additional information send me a PM and I'd be happy to help you.

Savannah/Tybee Island GA
Hilton Head SC
both use same airport (SAV)
Topsail Island NC
Bald Head Island NC (requires a ferry ride)
both use same airport (ILM) Wilmingotn NC 30 mins away
Charleston SC
and the other previously mentioned coastal SC areas
good luck and have fun!

I was just thinking about those driving from the south. It is a big issue for us. Coming from that direction the drive is like forever...piscesgirl0314 wrote:Hi there!

I do love it there, in fact my parents owned a rental property there when I was a kid in Virginia...

Emerald Isle NC is a 2-3 hours from Raleigh and offers ginormous houses.
the ride's a tad far though for a vacation trip.
those saying Norfolk to get to the OBX are on the right track, but flights in and out of there are somewhat limited. Not as bad as they used to be though.
We tend to stick to Emerald Isle because it's a tad more build up than some of the OBX...not in a bad way...more in a town with a few restaurants, a nearby aquarium and mini golf (for the kids) kind of way. I have plenty of info on EI if you need.
What gets tough with a lot of the east coast locations is airports. Either the nearby airport is on the small/limited size (Norfolk, Savannah, Wilmington) or the larger airports are far-ish away (RDU, CLT, ATL, etc)

Highly recommend Pawleys Island, SC! It is about a 45 minute drive south of Myrtle Beach, and have gotten decent airfare into Myrtle Beach airport. Great restaurants, laid back beach community, fabulous rental houses! Don't miss Pawleys Island Tavern! The big rental Company is Pawleys Island Realty, lots of the homes listed on Homeaway.com. We usually go every summer........

Thanks for the suggestions.
What were are finding is that most of the places we want to go, OBX being the number 1, are just not travel friendly for those of us flying in from all over the country. Having to rent a car and drive that distance makes it cost prohibitive for some of the folks that are one income families or single moms.
We are trying our best to make this affordable, as some of these ladies are on really tight budgets.
I knew that this would be hard but it is becoming darn near impossible. 30 women from all over the US and Canada. Add to that that most of us have never met!
