Weather in August?

Post by MIke »

Need help.
We cancelled our trip in May.I had to lay a few people off in March and it just didn't seem appropiate to go at that time.As hard as I'm trying not to go,the island is calling me bad.Especially after reading all your trip reports.
My question is does anybody(Ruth or Pia)have a feel for the weather the first week in August? Never been that late in the year but that looks like the only time to get away.

Hot, humid and higher possibility of hurricanes so get Trip Insurance.

But the water is great!

Hi Mike - I usually go in July, but because of a health issue, had to postpone until August 5 last year. As I remember, it was hot and humid, but otherwise just fine! :D Some rain at night and sometimes a shower or two during the day, but everything else - great. I'm going in August this year again - even later! Aug 15-25. Hope you enjoy, and that we both have no "H"s.

Now Gromit, you're describing Washington DC! The average temperature and humidity are lower in the USVI than this our swamp.

You can see average daily/weekly/monthly temperates at wunderground.com. The first week of August 2008 was an average of 84oF and 2007 was 86oF.

We went last August - the last week. The only issue we had was the MOSQUITTTTTOS! The weather otherwise was actually significantly less humid and HOT than I thought it would be. DC was a much worse.

Get trip insurance and enjoy!

The temperature on St. John doesn't change that much in the summer months, maybe 5 to 10 degrees, but the humidity does.
I see that you are from Mississippi so I doubt that you will have a problem with it, but if you are concerned rent a house with A/C in the bedrooms. You may not need it depending on where your house is located and the kind of breezes it gets, but it will give you peace of mind.
We live in a low spot near the water close to Cruz Bay and get no breeze in the summer, so we use our A/C for those few months only. (The rest of the year it is not an issue and we do not use our A/C from early November or so until around June, ever.)

We will be on St. John the first two weeks of August. We usually go in June or July but it didn't work out this year. What about jelly fish in August? They were starting to get bad last year when we were there the end of July. I guess they were the moon jellies. Is anyone interested in a Beach Bar gathering in August?

Hey Rick-- you know as well as I do that it's not the heat it's the stupidity.. I mean humidity.

It is MUCH more humid as the summer moves along on STJ and I don't care what the number on the thermometer says it feels WAY hotter than that. And sticky.

I love August on STJ (we were married on STJ before we moved here on Aug 5th :) ) weather usually is perfect - hot but humid and the water temp is excellent if you like bathwater temps :) Chance of hurricanes so take out insurance but in our time living here it may rain but usually at night :)

Come on down you will love it
